comunicato stampa

Verge is the fastest rising art fair enterprise in America. In only one year, it has established itself among fairs decades more established, with editions in Miami Beach during Art Basel and in New York during Armory Show. Founded by art critic and writer Michael Workman and artist Edouard Steinhauer under the umbrella of Workman/Steinhauer Productions, Verge chose to focus on emerging art as the cutting-edge in a market blindly obsessed with blue chips, a hangover from a boom times disinterest in innovation. Verge has seized this market niche to lead the way, introducing galleries and artists who have gone on to fill out the ranks of more established fairs such as SCOPE, Pulse and Volta. Verge artists are coveted and collected by important museums and top collectors, including the renowned media mogul and collector Charles Saatchi. Verge is lauded alongside major fairs in news coverage that has appeared in notable publications including the New York Times and The Art Newspaper.

Returning in 2010 for only its second year in Miami Beach, revving up the youthful energy that has made the brand a killer, the Catalina Hotel and Beach Club will once again be transformed into a temporary art center at the foot of Art Basel and the newly relocated Design / Miami, all now centered only two blocks from Verge on Collins Avenue. For those who take pride in their engagement with new and emerging art, “Missing out wouldn’t just be a missed show, it would be an embarrassment,” says fair co-founder Michael Workman.

This year’s fair will showcase the best in new and emerging art in galleries from five countries and expansive public projects, programming initiatives and in partnerships with a diversity of art organizations known for their innovative approaches to support of visual art.

Rush Arts/Corridor Galleries and Bombay Sapphire Presents
Russell Simmons’ renowned New York-based Rush Arts Gallery and sister Corridor Gallery have teamed up with Bombay Sapphire to present an exhibition on the second floor lobby of the Catalina, culminating a year’s worth of national exhibitions of the best in new and emerging photography. Touring the country for the last year, the Rush Arts/Bombay Sapphire show has selected the best work of emerging photographers across the country, from which two of the best from each exhibition will be chosen to present the work of 20 artists for a special exhibition during VERGE Miami. Artists TBA. For more information on Rush Arts Gallery, please visit www.rushartsgallery.org.

About Rush Arts/Corridor Galleries
Rush Arts Gallery + Resource Center is a core program of the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) organization founded in 1995 by brothers Russell, Danny and Joseph “Rev. Run” Simmons. RAG—headed by Curatorial Director, Nico Wheadon—is dedicated to providing exhibition opportunities to the emerging artistic community and also exposes disadvantaged urban youth to contemporary arts and culture through educational programming initiatives sponsored in part by a grant from the New York State Council for the Arts.

In the 90s, the mission of Rush Arts Gallery was to provide resources and support to early career, non-commercial artists of color who lacked representation in Chelsea’s art district. Since it’s establishment, this mission has been expanded to support the diverse creative practices of the entire emerging artistic community, including artists, curators and writers from around the globe. Rush Arts Gallery provides an inclusive space for new audiences and promotes experimental ventures in visual production, curatorial work, performance and community involvement.

The gallery’s Resource Center is equally progressive and donates the use of its space for events in all disciplines, with one-night events or fundraisers ranging from fashion shows and magazine release parties to grassroots fundraisers and educational lectures. In 2008, the Gallery was awarded the Mayor’s Award for Arts and Culture from the department of Cultural Affairs for its pioneering programming.

About Verge
Verge is an international platform for the most exciting and interesting in new and emerging art. Verge exists to establish boundaries of the extraordinary as a counter to the natural compulsion towards stagnation in the way art is evaluated and delivered to the public. Staying true to this necessary state for the advancement of art requires a sustained focus on the best new ideas and practices of those marginal or newly emerging to international art audiences. The satisfaction of this fixed requirement for a healthy and competitive artistic culture is at the core of Verge as an international exposition of the highest quality artistic production and the galleries, museums and audiences who sustain it.
