The term 'landscape' is a cultural and historical construct, a notion of the natural defined by man's relationship to his environment, his activity in it and most pertinently his view of it. Photographs of Contemporary England
The term 'landscape' is a cultural and historical construct, a notion of the
natural defined by man's relationship to his environment, his activity in it
and most pertinently his view of it. The English landscape, on this small
and densely populated island, is the product of the interaction of man and
the natural world. Formed over hundreds of years, it has been created by us
in a very real material way as well as in any visual or conceptual sense.
In an aesthetic context, the English landscape tradition as artistic genre
is loaded with 18th Century ideas of the picturesque, the harmonious
pastoral, Wordsworthian romanticism and Ruskin's moral naturalism and it's
reverence for domesticated vistas of trees, lakes and country paths. Yet the
England of today offers a very different social and visual reality from the
picture postcard of a quintessential 'green and pleasant land'.
These photographers have explored and interpreted this contemporary
landscape and suggest a range of approaches both visual and emotional in
their re-viewing: from the suburban to the rural, from the formal to the
intimate, from the agricultural to the industrial.
