Cynthia Broan Gallery is pleased to announce "teenage symphonies to god"
the premiere solo exhibition of works on paper by David X Levine, featuring
a series of circular drawings which visually represent the spirit of the
musicians who inspire him.
The exhibition's title, "teenage symphonies to god," is taken from an
interview with the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson, as he described the band's
pop
classic "Good Vibrations"-his attempt to imbue mere pop music with cosmic
love.
Drawn by hand, the circles are imperfect, and their uneven shape and spacing
cause the overall form to drift slightly off center as it expands outward.
Smudges, signs of erasure and corrective collage add to the handmade
quality, giving the work a human touch. Large areas are filled with colored
pencil, buffed to give the color a depth that could not be achieved with
paint. Levine forgoes high production values in order to evoke the pure joy
of artmaking, the unique beauty of imperfection, the warmth of the human
hand and the sincerity of the self-taught: qualities which have become
undervalued in today's society.
Public Opening Reception Thursday, Oct 17, 6-9pm
