The producers of the worlds largest international art fair devoted to
contemporary art The Armory Show, The International Fair Of New Art
will debut a new fair in October 2002 focused exclusively on photography
and video, from important and rare vintage prints to photo-based
contemporary art. The Armory Photography Show 2002 will open Friday,
October 25, 2002, and run through Monday, October 28, 2002, at the Javits
Center North Pavilion in New York City.
Eighty leading international dealers invited from the worlds of both
photography and contemporary art will exhibit a wide array of work ranging
from early print processes to film, video and digital media, with special
emphasis on variety and innovation.
The Armory Photography Show 2002 will celebrate the past and future of
photography and include galleries renowned for their specialization in
photography as well as other contemporary media. The fair seeks to expand
the collecting universe for photographs and photo-based works by bringing
together the traditional photo collector with collectors of contemporary
art. These two communities have seen increasing overlap, but this will be
the first time they get a truly international marketplace with the quality
and reputation that is The Armory Show.
The Armory Photography Show 2002 will be a smaller, selective, and keenly
focused fair where every piece is a stand out. The North Pavilion proved
especially popular with exhibitors and guests when The Armory Show 2000
was presented there. It will provide a perfect home for photography with
its natural light and clean space. It will be a fair of manageable size
and scale.
In addition to exhibiting dealers, current plans anticipate the on-site
presence of leading art and photography magazines and a special section
for book publishers. The participation of the worlds most respected
photographic book publishers will be unique among New York photo fairs and
the producers of The Armory Photography Show 2002 consider their
involvement vital to any celebration of photography and photo-based art.
A Vernissage for collectors will take place Thursday, October 24, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
