Caucase - Souvenirs de Voyage. A photography exhibition
Caucase - Souvenirs de Voyage. A photography exhibition that documents the itinerary first covered by Calouste Gulbenkian on a long journey he made through the region as a youth and resulting in the publication of the 1891 book "La Transcaucasie et la Peninsule D'Apcheron - Souvenirs de Voyage". On the occasion of its reprinting both in its original French version but now also in English, this book of photography recreates the visual memory of that original voyage one century later. Some of these photographs have been selected for the exhibition. His travel book also served as the point of departure for another project: two young artists - Pauliana Valente Pimentel and Sandra Rocha - embarked on the same Transcaucasia trip to gather the material for a work recreating the visual memory of the original itinerary experienced over a century later. In their accounts of daily situations, in an eclectic mixture of individual portraits and capturing the diverse outer and inner landscapes, their book pays homage to Calouste Gulbenkian. According to the photographers themselves, the emotion of their tour of the Caucasus stemmed less from recognising the physical characteristics of places but rather the perception of history enveloping those lands and, in this particular case, the history of Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian.
