The Sara Asperger Gallery, Berlin, is glad to host Betrachtungsapparat - Viewing Apparatus, a solo exhibition by Vito Pace.
The artworks represent a reflection of the vision mechanisms inspired by the artist´s more congenial place: his atelier.
Taking as a point of reference G. Courbet’s L'atelier du peintre, where the painter represents himself inside his atelier while painting, Pace reverses the situation and emphasizes the natural and artificial viewing apparatus and the relationship between the artistic space, traits of surrounding and the representation of art.

The artist´s research consists of three steps: Erasmusstrasse, Atelier Berlin and Turn to Stone. The starting point is Erasmusstrasse, where Pace´s atelier in Pforzheim is deprived of its feature as a working and creation environment, to become an evocative place for a political action, but this is only evident from the outside. So the artist too can depict it only from the outside, performing a puzzling displacement between artistic environment and artistic creation.

This vision has his counterpart in Atelier Berlin, a series carried out in two different times. In the first one, the object of representation is not Pace´s atelier, but a distinct place where he lived during an artist-in-residence. In order to direct the look, Pace uses a kind of a self-made camera obscura that, placed on the window, gives him a bounded framing of the atelier´s outside area. In the second one, Pace points the same device at the Treptower Park in Berlin, with the same inclination used in the atelier, and he reproduces the landscape. The final step of the research – or, for other ways, its origin - is Turn to stone, which reproduces the classic process of artwork direct observation by the viewer, who is asked to look through two holes in a fictitious place built for him inside the sculpture. The research on the eyesight processes actively involves the viewer him/herself and becomes a reflection on the more essential meaning of art creation through the objectification of the technical devices and the variety of the media used to create the different works.

The catalogue is published by the indipendent publishing house Baustellenbüro:
