Matt uses readymade, found and disregarded objects; elevating their position in the world, raising their stature and bringing them power. Reinventing objects through compositional and logistical problem solving is. In his practice spatial exploration frequently incorporates formalist concerns and decision-making. The detritus he works with dictates the function and personality within the sculptures, simultaneously constructing a narrative through a pre-existing history that the objects possess.
The work is about the reviving of objects in a new form, creating life through re-adjusting, building upon and manipulating; questioning the value of 'things'. Plans unfold as objects are made, composition of particular works evolve through experimentation and organic processes where decisions are made through assemblage. Plaster, resin and clay alongside scrap timber and steel allow him to bridge gaps between the numerous pieces of detritus and create archaeologic al clues in the excavation process of his practice.
