On show the series 'Protectors' that represents a different trade; on each photo we see a saint armed with the attribute of the trade represented. In this manner, during the Middle Ages, the powerful trade co-operations regrouped under the aegis of the Patron Saints, in order to comply with the church's commandments who dreaded their growing influence and the organization of a secular opposition.
Sabine Pigalle lives and works in Paris, she started her career in photography as an autodidact. She worked for several years as stylist and fashion photographer for magazines before she started focusing on autonomous photography. Pigalle exhibited with great success in Europe, Asia and the United States.
Pigalles series ‘Protectors’ will be shown in Galerie Brandt. Each ‘Protector’, or Patron Saint represents a different trade; on each photo we see a saint armed with the attribute of the trade represented. In this manner, during the Middle Ages, the powerful trade co-operations regrouped under the aegis of the Patron Saints, in order to comply with the church’s commandments who dreaded their growing influence and the organization of a secular opposition. The icons painted white, illustrating the martyrdom, are bathed in sepulchral light, and refer back to Flemish paintings but also to ancient statues, through the use of nudity.
In conclusion, this collection deals with a subject that is at the heart of Pigalles artistic research: the symbolic heritage of myths and their interweaving into modern culture, even though the two worlds of temporal and spiritual order split a long time ago.
