The Double Devotion of Vladimir Kordjukov
Vladimir Kurdjukov is a man most of whose adult life has been devoted to two things, his painting and the education of his son Nikita, afflicted since childhood with cerebral palsy. He personally taught the crippled boy to walk and to paint so well that Nikita has himself become an exhibited artist.
The 47-year-old Vladimir, whose show at the Ikra from 13 November to 10 December 2002 will be his first in London, describes his own work as autobiographical. I am a realist, even when I paint abstract, he adds. He was born in Donetsk, Ukraine, where he studied before moving to the Stroganoff Art College in Moscow. As a young man he earned his living as an official Soviet tractor artist. He was deeply in love with his wife Alyona, but she left him three years after the birth of their only child, Nikita. Vladimir himself never faltered in his determination to care for the boy.
He has exhibited often, both abroad and in Russia, and his work is represented in a number of public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in Moscow. His London exhibition of oil paintings and drawings includes Goat (attached), where the animal and its great blue eyes are depicted with broad brush strokes against a background of blue and green.
Christmas get-together
As a special treat for our growing band of visitors the Ikra Gallery is putting together a Christmas show featuring some of the best work by artists we have already exhibited this year, namely Basmanov, Gneushev, Vasiliev, Pankratov and Yepikhin. It will take place immediately after the Kurdjukov exhibiton closes in December.
