La pratica artistica di Balkenhol proviene dal minimalismo e dal concettualismo degli anni '70 e dal suo desiderio di reintrodurre la figura nella scultura contemporanea.
Attraverso la sua carriera, densa di mostre instituzionali, ha epresso in modo rigoroso l'approfondimento dello studio della figura rilavorando i suoi classici soggetti che ormai fanno parte del suo vocabolario espressivo. Le statue tratte da un unico blocco di legno sono state negli ultimi anni accompagnate da bassorilievi dipinti, la cui pratica ha spesso sfiorato il paragone con la perfezione pittorica.

Ogni lavoro è espressione della spontaneità dell'artista nel trattamento del materiale usato ma anche nel richiamo a pose naturali.
Le opere a volte assumono la percezione emotiva della miniatura, mentre nasce nello spettatore il desiderio di toccare quelle piccole figure nate dall'espressionismo tedesco di radice sociale.

Stephan Balkenhol è nato a Fritzlar (Hessen) in Germania nel 1957. Dal 1984 espone regolarmente in importanti gallerie e musei, tra cui la Kunsthalle di Basilea nel 1988, la Kunsthalle di Amburgo nel 1991, l'Irish Museum of Modern Art di Dublino sempre nel 1991, il Witte de With Center for the Arts di Rotterdam nel 1992, il Musee d'Art Contemporain de Rochechouart in Francia e la National Galerie di Berlino nel 1994, l'Hirshhorn Museum di Washington nel 1995, il Montreal Museum of Fine Art nel 1996, l'Arts Club of Chicago nel 1998, la Galleria Civica d'Arte Contemporanea di Trento nel 1999, lo Sprengel Museum di Hannover nel 2003, il National Museum of Art di Osaka nel 2005, la Kunsthalle di Baden-Baden nel 2006, il Museum der Modern di Salisburgo, il MKM Museum Kuppermuhle fur Moderne Kunst di Duisburg nel 2007, la Deichtorhallen di Amburgo nel 2008-2009, il Musee de Grenoble in Francia nel 2010.

Stephan Balkenhol

Balkenhol's artistic practice derives from the Minimalism and Conceptual Art of the '70s and his desire to bring the figure back into contemporary sculpture. His study of the figure has been rigorously developed by reworking the classic subjects that are now part of his expressive vocabulary all through his career, as presented in a host of shows in major institutions. The statues carved from a single block of wood have been accompanied in the last few years by painted bas-reliefs that have often verged on pictorial perfection.

Every work is an expression of the artist's spontaneity in handling the material used but also in the reference to natural poses. The works sometimes take on the emotive perception of the miniature, sparking a desire in viewers to reach out and touch the small figures born out of socially rooted German Expressionism.
