“FOR THE PRIMITIVE ARTS AND MOST NOTABLY FOR VODUN, THERE IS JACQUES KERCHACHE AND ONLY HIM.”
ANDRÉ MALRAUX
The Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain will present for the first time an exceptional group of Vodun sculptures from the collection Anne and Jacques Kerchache, in a scenography conceived by Enzo Mari, one of the great masters of Italian design. Bringing together nearly one hundred bocio and including works that now belong to other private collectors, Vodun, African Voodoo will be the first major exhibition devoted uniquely to this West African sculptural tradition. Organized in close collaboration with Anne Kerchache (today Mrs Kamal Douaoui), the exhibition will also reveal the personal notes, letters and photographs of Jacques Kerchache, that relate his travels to Africa, his research on Vodun, and his projects for presenting the Primitive Arts in French museums. The presentation of archive film footage of the expeditions of Jacques Kerchache will situate Vodun within its context, providing the visitor with a deeper understanding of an art that reflects the timeless and universal concerns of humanity.
Round-table conference: Perspectives on Vodun
To mark the opening of the exhibition Vodun: African Voodoo, the Fondation Cartier will organize a round-table discussion that will bring together the authors of the exhibition catalog for a conversation on Vodun and the collection of Anne and Jacques Kerchache.
Debate will be mediated by Jean-Paul Colleyn, anthropologist and Professor at EHESS in Paris.
