La galleria upp è lieta di presentare Destination, prima personale di Michal Martychowiec ospitata nei propri spazi. La mostra raccoglie due intensi progetti fotografici dell’artista polacco che sviluppano una riflessione sulla memoria individuale, e sulle dinamiche di sedimentazione e trasformazione del ricordo.

Nelle opere della serie The Magic Mountain, Martychowiec ripercorre un viaggio in uno delle mete più frequenti della propria infanzia alla ricerca dell’atmosfera e delle suggestioni che occupavano la propria memoria. Un viaggio a ritroso, in cui le brume ondivaghe del ricordo sono costrette a confrontarsi con le asprezze della realtà, a fare i conti con la intervallo temporale, con l’imprecisione e la vaghezza che filtrano e deformano ogni dettaglio. Ma anche con la forza irresistibile del desiderio e della volontà, che arrangiano e riaggiustano i particolari secondo le aspettative che sono via via in noi maturate. Nelle nebbie di quella montagna incantata Martychowiec mostra come non sia possibile immergersi due volte allo stesso fiume (come già Eraclito ci ammoniva), e svela come il desiderio e le attese individuali possano influenzare, ben oltre quello che saremmo indotti a pensare, non solo il futuro che è davanti a noi, ma anche il passato che ci sta alle spalle. I ricordi diventano così sfuggenti, braci incandescenti di cui ignoriamo tanto il calore quanto l’instancabile vitalità.

In Heavenly Coppice è invece la foresta ad essere protagonista, un bosco che si svela nella propria naturale e misteriosa natura di luogo magico, di spazio impenetrabile in cui perdersi. È la selva oscura in cui Dante si smarrisce, uno spazio apparentemente omogeneo in cui non sembrano valere le regole della topologia ed ogni sentiero sembra uguale a quelli vicini. C’è un buio primordiale ,negli alberi che Martychowiec fotografa e nella vegetazione che fa da sfondo ai personaggi dalla Caccia nella foresta di Paolo Uccello, che l’artista polacco immortala prendendoli in prestito. Ritagli di un mondo sommerso e lontano, in cui vedere vuol dire conoscere, ri-conoscere, ri-immaginare. Allo spettatore non resta che trattenere il respiro.

Michal Martychowiec è nato a Lublin (Polonia) nel 1987. Ha esposto al Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle di Varsavia, al Saint Martins College of Art & Design di Londra, alla Signum Foudation di Verona. Vive e lavora a Londra.

We are pleased to present Destination, first solo exhibition in the spaces of galleria upp by Michal Martychowiec. The exhibition brings together two intense photographic projects of the Polish artist that develop a reflection on individual memory and the dynamics of layering and transformation of remembrances.

In the series Destination: The Magic Mountain, Martychowiec recalls a trip back to a place he used to visit in his childhood in search of the atmosphere and the ideas that occupied his memory. A trip back, where the wavering mists of memory are forced to deal with the harshness of reality, to cope with a time interval, with the imprecision and vagueness that filter and distort every detail, and even with the irresistible force of desire and will, arranging and rearranging fragments of memory, according to expectations that gradually matured in us. In the mists of the Magic Mountain Martychowiec shows how it is not possible to bathe in the same river twice (as Heraclitus warned us). He reveals how desires and expectations of the individual, far beyond from what we would be led to think, do not just influence the future that is before us, but also the past behind us. Memories become so elusive, glowing embers of which we ignore as much their heat as their indefatigable vitality.

Heavenly Coppice focuses on the forest, a forest that is revealed in its natural and mysterious nature of magical, impenetrable space in which to lose oneself. It is the dark forest in wich Dante is lost, an apparently homogeneous area where the rules do not seem to rely on topology and every path looks the same as the next. There is a primeval darkness in the photographed trees and in the vegetation, a backdrop to the characters from the Hunt in the Forest by Paolo Uccello, that the Polish artist borrows and immortalizes. Scraps of the submerged and distant, where seeing means to know, to re-learn, re-imagine. The viewer can only hold his breath.

Michal Martychowiec was born in Lublin (Poland) in 1987. He has exhibited at the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw, Saint Martins College of Art & Design in London, the Signum Foundation in Venice. He lives and works in London.
