Multi-media collaboration at BALTIC

LOUD & CLEAR is a unique new interdisciplinary project in which leading visual artists, composers and publicity designers have collaborated to produce a series of 9 DVD's, that will be shown on large plasma screens both inside and outside BALTIC from 22 November.
By involving practitioners from different creative disciplines, both commercial and artistic, LOUD & CLEAR seeks a dynamic exchange between image and music. Each of the 9 DVD's contains a collaboration between 1 artist, 1 composer and 1 advertising agency, which will be played on large TV screens whose sound increases the closer the viewer gets to them.
This ambitious international project includes contributions from British artist Gillian Wearing, Dutch fashion designers Vicktor & Rolf, and advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi.
LOUD & CLEAR, premiered at BALTIC and later touring to a number of venues internationally, is based on the idea of outdoor electronic billboards, which are usually used to advertise commercial products.
Here however, the advertising agencies were asked to make a non-commercial film based on the collaboration between an artist and a musician. The resulting DVD's contain a symbiosis of art, music and advertising and show the influence of visual art on advertising, and vice versa, in recent years.
Sune Nordgren, BALTIC Director, said:
"LOUD & CLEAR is a truly international, multi-media collaboration between artists from different creative disciplines. We are delighted to be able to host the world premiere of this innovative new project at BALTIC."

BALTIC The Centre for Contemporary Art, opened to the public on 13 July 2002 and is funded by the National Lottery through the Arts Council of England, Gateshead Council, Northern Arts, European Regional Development Fund and One NorthEast. The £46m project has transformed the former Baltic Flour Mills, a disused 1950s grain warehouse, into a leading international contemporary arts space, one of the biggest temporary art spaces in Europe.
Since opening, BALTIC has attracted over 350,000 visitors.
BALTIC houses five galleries covering over 3000sqm of art space as well as facilities for the creation and study of contemporary art including artists' studios, a cinema/lecture space, digital media labs and a library and archive (opening late 2002). The building also has three very different food and drink spaces operated by celebrated restaurateurs, the McCoys, including a roof top restaurant with amazing views of Tyneside.
Ellis Williams architects won the competition to convert BALTIC in 1994. BALTIC is part of a £250 million regeneration strategy for East Gateshead, a 15 year scheme to redevelop Gateshead Quayside and the surrounding area and create 1840 new homes and 1500 new jobs. In 1997, The Arts Council awarded BALTIC £33.4 million from the National Lottery Fund plus £1.5 million a year for five years towards the running costs. Other sources of funding for the BALTIC project are Gateshead Council, Northern Arts, European Regional Development Fund and One NorthEast.
The Bifrons Foundation was set up in 1998 with the aim of brining together the independent disciplines of contemporary art and contemporary music. The foundation organises interdisciplinary projects in continually changing contexts.
