Emerging New York-based artist Sanford Biggers will construct and install several new works created especially for the Contemporary Arts Museum,
the artist's first Texas exhibition.
In addition, a number of recent works will supplement these installations providing Houston audiences an overview of
Biggers' conceptual and formal meditations on the ambiguous territory between the sacred and profane. Through the use of recycled and discarded
materials, Biggers seeks to challenge the viewers' assessment of "everyday" materials and their transcendence beyond designated function.
Recently,
Biggers' work was included in the exhibition, Freestyle, presented by the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York. His collaborative work with Jennifer
Zackin was also included in the 2002 Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
During the scheduled exhibition, the
Contemporary Arts Museum will collaborate with Project Row Houses to present a site-specific installation by Biggers at that site.
Sanford Biggers:
Afrotemple, is the 135th exhibition in the Contemporary Arts Museum's Perspectives series and is curated by Associate Curator Valerie Cassel.
A
Perspectives-format catalogue accompanies the exhibition and contains an essay by Cassel, reproductions of exhibited work, and documentation on
the artist's career.
