Duffins new works are the result of formative experiences; his early years in
an industrial urban town and his training as a draughtsman which have
contributed to his ongoing fascination with the man made world. He records
these environments in small sketchbooks, drawing at all times of day and night.
The paintings that emerge from these sketches are a synthesis of the originals
and the re-imagining of a place through memory. His work has always reflected
his own journey and in these works show a widened perspective of the world.
His personal geography ranges from remote areas of Cumbria to iconic
international landmarks which seem familiar in his distinctive scenes.
These latest works explore further the milieu between still paint and film
still. Duffin becomes cinematographer and director through oil and acrylic,
filming his own quiet and mysterious narratives while creating a unique,
dramatic atmosphere.
His images are like lost stills from an unseen film in which the characters
struggle to deal with life's journey. They wander through a world of harsh
daylight, electric night and imposing architecture, stumbling across quiet
moments of reverie and in search of a sense of place.
