comunicato stampa

From the 11th until the 15th of May 2011, the 27th edition of Art Amsterdam will take place. With 133 galleries participating from throughout Europe, North America and Asia, Art Amsterdam is the largest contemporary and modern art fair in the Netherlands. The fair is a springboard for up-and-coming talent and a platform for famous names from post-war visual art. The selection of work is more international than ever: more than a third of the galleries are from outside the Netherlands. Art Amsterdam will be held in the Parkhal (hall 8) of the Amsterdam RAI Convention Centre.

‘No Holds Barred’
Gallery owners with ideas for wild, outrageous or spectacular presentations can again let themselves go in No Holds Barred. The title of this part of the programme is borrowed from an American wrestling show. No Holds Barred means that there are no rules and that all holds are allowed. At Art Amsterdam: no limits will be set for the presentations. Everything is permitted, anything goes. A photo collage, a performance, an installation, a conceptual work, a film – nothing is impossible and everything is allowed, as long as it fits within an arena of 25 square metres. An international jury, comprising curator Christiane Rekade, critic Nicolai Strom-Olsen and collector Albert Groot, selected the twelve best proposals. These will be realised in the heart of the art fair. No Holds Barred is possible in part thanks to Accenture.

Art in Amsterdam
During Art Amsterdam, there is also a lot to experience beyond the fair. A great number of museums, hotbeds, artists' initiatives and events have united under the banner of Art in Amsterdam. Many of them are offering a special programme during the fair. Art in Amsterdam wants to put the capital on the national and international map as a city of contemporary art for 5 days a year.

Young & Collecting (for young people aged between 17 and 27)
You don’t need to read stacks of handbooks to have an opinion on art. You don’t need to talk like the Queen to discuss art. And you certainly don’t need to be called Yves Saint Laurent to buy art. But it’s handy if someone shows you the way. So, again in 2011, Art Amsterdam presents 'Young & Collecting', for young people aged between 17 and 27 with an 'open mind' and a healthy curiosity. For one whole day (13th of May), young people learn to look at art under the guidance of a gallery owner, a collector and an artist. Following this, the participants may select work for the SNS REAAL Fonds NOG Collection at Art Amsterdam. The winning proposal will be purchased for the collection.

We Like Art! Lounge
Not just looking, but buying too. This year, Art Amsterdam offers handles for visitors who are interested in contemporary art but have not purchased any yet. Art Amsterdam has encapsulated the constant search to link art lovers to galleries in We Like Art! The We Like Art! lounge proves this with top-quality art for sale for less than €1,500. A lounge will be furnished at the fair with affordable works of art from the participating galleries. More information about We Like Art! can be found at www.welikeart.nl

Art Amsterdam goes virtual
Art Amsterdam is the first art fair in the world where you can be present both physically and virtually. Apart from at the fair itself, exhibitors at Art Amsterdam can offer works of art through a stand on an ‘online fair’. Art Amsterdam is cooperating with Open Art Collection here (OAC), an international collectors platform with Jan Hoet in the advisory board. In the meantime, 73 Art Amsterdam 2011 participants have registered for this pilot project. The virtual fair can be visited for free. Internet sales continue for a month after the end of the fair in the RAI. More information about OAC is available at www.openartcollection.com.

Art Amsterdam introduces an iPhone App
For this edition, Art Amsterdam introduces an iPhone App with recognition system, through which collectors and others interested only need to point their smartphone at a work of art that appeals to them to immediately get detailed information about it. This information can be shared with friends through Facebook, Twitter and email. In addition, this revolutionary application offers the possibility of saving a work of art as a favourite, so that it can be looked at again later on. This innovative application is made possible in part by Collectrium.

Art Amsterdam return train ticket: €7.50
The ambition of Amsterdam RAI to have as many people as possible visit the RAI by public transport is really starting to take shape. Amsterdam RAI and NS have joined forces in the last few years to entice people to travel by train. Fair visitors who purchase a ticket through www.artamsterdam.nl travel for only €7.50 with a 2nd class NS day return from any NS station in the Netherlands by train to Amsterdam RAI. From here, it is just a couple of minutes’ walk to the RAI complex.

Guided tours
Experiencing art achieves real depth if background information is provided for the exhibit. Art Amsterdam believes in 'informed viewing'. The fair has found a partner in the young agency AimAtArt, which fully supports this philosophy. AimAtArt provides free guided tours around the fair. Every half hour and twice a day in English.
