art vienna: a fair of superlatives
* Austria’s biggest international fair for art of the 20th and 21st centuries:
* all exhibits on sale
* new concept: open from 3 p.m. until midnight
* date: 28 November – 1 December 2002
* emphasis on art after 1960
* special focus on Eastern Europe
Lately, Vienna, the city of culture, also boasts an art fair of international importance: on 28 November 2002, art vienna will be opened in the Messezentrum Wien. Though it is only the second presentation, the event has already established itself as Austria’s biggest international fair for art of the 20th and 21st centuries. 80 galleries and art dealers from 15 countries will show their highlights, and, considering the interest in 2001, the organizers expect 10,000 to 12,000 visitors this year.
An impressive survey: 80 galleries from 15 countries
What distinguishes art vienna from most other events of its kind is its openness in all directions. 80 galleries and art dealers from 15 countries present the artists they currently have in their program. The result is a far more thorough survey of today’s real art market than that offered by even the most exhaustive group exhibitions or retrospectives.
art vienna speaker Alois Larch: "It’s the visitors’ needs that are important to us, whether they are collectors or art lovers which only come to look. We do not want to confront these people with rigid attitudes but with variety. Fairs should always be a mirror of the real market and no curated shows like those offered by most museums and other institutions active in the fields of art and culture."
Both experienced collectors and newcomers will find enough people to ask questions, to talk shop, and to discuss major future trends. Gallerists have their very personal inside tips they believe in – tips concerning artists that are still completely unknown or just on the verge of making it, offering the curious collector a chance for a good investment not to be missed.
But visitors will also come upon works by acclaimed 20th-century artists like Niki de Saint Phalle, Jürgen Messensee, Arnulf Rainer, Kiki Kogelnik, David La Chapelle, and even Pablo Picasso.
All people with enough money on them may leave with an acrylic picture by Andy Warhol, for example. art vienna definitely presents itself as a sales fair. What you see on the walls are neither museum pieces nor works on loan: all items on show are for sale – unless another visitor has already jumped at the opportunity.
With 360.000 EUR, Andy Warhol’s work is the most expensive at this year’s fair. At the other end of the spectrum, you will find etchings by young artists from 150 EUR upwards.
Innovative opening hours: long art nights
Other fairs leave their visitors only one choice: either take half a day off or come on weekends when the place is crowded.
art vienna is open to the public when the people interested in art have time to look round: in the evenings. >From Thursday to Saturday, the fair opens at 3.00 p.m. and closes at midnight. The opening hours comply with all working people’s needs.
Additional events guarantee that a visit to art vienna may well turn into a long art night:
* Daily after-work happenings are aimed at attracting managers and employees. A visit to the fair, stimulating confrontations with contemporary art, and a couple of relaxing drinks and talks with colleagues and other art lovers – this is a notion that will certainly lure people directly from the office to the fair.
* The gastronomy is on a clearly higher level than that usual at fairs. The restaurant even offers gourmet meals prepared by a master chef. This is why it is more than tempting to stay for dinner and mix artistic and culinary delights – stroll from the presentations into the restaurant and back to the pictures and sculptures again after a delicious dinner.
* The third wave of visitors to art vienna is to be expected later in the evening. These visitors will combine their browse with an excellent drink at one of the bars or exhibitors.
Sunday is essentially a family day. This is why the fair already opens at 10.00 a.m. with a special brunch, and it will be all over at 6.00 p.m.
Special presentation: Go East
Within the next years, Vienna will also become an East-West art market hub. For young artists from the candidate countries who want to become known with their works in Western Europe, the city is already the place to go.
Collectors in Europe and the USA have become interested in the young Eastern art scene quite some time ago. Mysterious rumors about undiscovered talents go the rounds, and there is honest amazement at the freshness of approaches and the unconventional ideas born in countries with a hardly developed art market that reach the West.
The special presentation "Go East†assembles galleries from seven countries: Bulgaria, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, and the Czech Republic. These galleries offer a representative survey of the works their programs comprise.
art vienna speaker Alois Larch: "People interested in this very fascinating market will hardly find a better overview and more appropriate possibilities for a comparison than this event."
Focus: young art for young collectors
art vienna is more than a meeting place for established collectors and suppliers of established art: it is aimed at supporting the up-and-coming – on both sides.
For young artists, there are special sponsored booths to be rented by galleries at prizes far below standard rates – provided that the artists are younger than forty and that their works have not yet been presented or purchased by museums and other exhibition institutions. Real newcomers will show their work in 11 booths this year.
Reasonable admission fees and a family day on Sunday are aimed at attracting young people interested in art.
Admission fees
The art vienna fair management deliberately pursues a low-price admission fee policy. A ticket only costs about half as much as usual at fairs. Day ticket holders and people with a pass for the duration of the fair receive a free exhibition catalogue. And since the atmosphere should be relaxed from the very beginning, all visitors are welcomed with a glass of Schlumberger Sekt.
Day ticket: 5 EUR (including 1 catalogue and 1 glass of Schlumberger Sekt)
Evening ticket for visits after 7.00 p.m.: 3 EUR (including 1 glass of Schlumberger Sekt)
Pass for the duration of the fair: 10 EUR (including 1 catalog and 1 glass of sekt on the first day)
Sunday (family day): free admission for all adults accompanied by a child
For young art lovers: free admission for children under 14; 3 EUR for students and pupils older than 14 (including one soft welcome drink)
Gourmet bonus: free admission for people with a reservation at the gourmet restaurant; all soirée invitations have a "gourmet bonus†attached – and there will be a glass of sekt waiting for them, of course…
