Dal 2004 Charles Avery (Oban, 1973) si dedica alla rappresentazione e alla narrazione di un mondo immaginario, caratterizzato da una sua specifica geografia e abitato da una popolazione, una flora e una fauna che scaturiscono incessantemente ed esclusivamente da una lucida visionarietà, da una chiara e metafisica razionalità. Concepito come un arcipelago, circondato da un oceano nero, questo mondo (The Islanders) ha come nucleo centrale un’Isola, identificata soltanto con il nome del suo capoluogo, la città portuale di Onomatopoeia, una sorta di microcosmo che racchiude in sé l’idea di tutto il progetto e il senso della metafora intorno alla quale ruotano il pensiero e il lavoro di Avery.

Attraverso un racconto che si sviluppa in capitoli (le diverse mostre), il narratore (l’artista) mette in scena una riflessione sulla cosmologia e sulla geografia dei territori che lui stesso va tracciando (inventando) e contemporaneamente scoprendo.

Personaggio chiave di questo Universo è il cacciatore (The Hunter), attraverso il quale Avery fa scoprire progressivamente allo spettatore i luoghi, gli abitanti e gli esseri che li popolano. Nel suo girovagare alla scoperta dell’Isola, il cacciatore si imbatte nella moltitudine dei personaggi disegnati e inventati dall’artista. “È come se scoprisse un territorio sconosciuto nel momento stesso in cui lo inventa”, afferma Avery.

E come un network che connette punti, il suo lavoro consiste in un processo di disidentificazione. È come se Avery scrivesse un lungo diario, in cui racconta i suoi incontri con strani abitanti: gli Alephs, Mr. Impossible, Stone-mice, i Noumeons, the Ghosts, le gemelle Theodora e Dorothea… In un’epoca altamente tecnologica, caratterizzata da satelliti e GPS, dove tutto è localizzabile e cronologicamente rintracciabile, Charles Avery crea una dimensione epica, in cui la connotazione temporale esiste solo in quanto tessitura di miti, leggende e racconti bizzarri e infiniti. E reinventa la figura dell’esploratore, che si insinua nell’immobile mondo dei pensieri umani e conduce lo spettatore alla scoperta dei segreti dell’isola, e delle leggi che la governano: il mondo ambiguo e complesso immaginato da Avery, strutturato in modo da ammaliare e alienare lo spettatore, condurlo in una sorta di eterotopia, in cui spazio e tempo si confondono, sollecitarlo alla eterna dialettica tra “dovere” e “identità”. Ogni elemento raffigurato da Avery – un serpente, una piramide, un triangolo – è un archetipo, un messaggio che, seppur generato da una verità astratta, che ha origine soltanto nella mente dell’artista, può essere rioggettivato e materialmente rappresentato, ma può e deve essere letto in chiave metaforica e analitica. Dopo “The Islanders: An Introduction”, titolo della prima mostra (Parsol Unit Foundation for Contemporary Art, Londra), nella quale Charles Avery ha presentato al pubblico il suo Universo, con “Onomatopoeia: part 1”, allestita presso Le Plateau/Frac Ile-de-France, Kunstverein Hannover e EX3 Firenze e “Onomatopoeia part 2: The Port”, Avery ha proseguito a raccontare gli sviluppi della storia dell’Isola e dei suoi personaggi. Nuovi disegni e nuove sculture condurranno in mostra ad inedite vicende e alla scoperta di altri protagonisti dello stravagante e immaginifico mondo di The Islanders.

From 2004 Charles Avery (Oban 1973) has devoted himself to describe an imaginary world, characterized by its own geography and inhabited by a specific population, flora and fauna, elements that testify Avery’s sharp-witted visionary and metaphysical rationality.

The artist presents this place (The Isaldenders) as an archipelago, surrounded by a black ocean and with an Island as its central nucleus. Onomatopoeia is the only town in the Island and epitomizes the main idea of Charles Avery’s project and the metaphorical meanings connected with his work and thoughts.

The narrator (the artist himself) presents, through a story divided in chapters (various exhibitions), a general reflection on the cosmology and geography of these territories that he sketches out while simultaneously imagining them.

Key character of this Universe is The Hunter, through his “adventures” Avery reveals to the audience places, inhabitants and the strange figures that populate his drawings. Through the wanderings of the Hunter Charles Avery unravels his imaginary world: “he wanders and hunts …. Its ambition is to discover, bit by bit, an unknow territory while inventing it.

Like a network that connects points, his work consist of a process of disidentification. The story is told like a long book in which he tells us about strange figures: Alephs, Mr. Impossible, Stone-mice, the Noumeons, the Ghosts, the twins Theodora e Dorothea…

Opposite to our technological age, characterized by satellites and GPS, where everything can be reached and chronologically found, Charles Avery creates an epic dimension: the temporal connotation exists here only as myths, legends and tales textures, that are bizarre and endless. He totally reinvents the figure of the explorer but in the immobile world of human thought, while guiding the audience through the Island’s secrets passing on the laws that rule this imaginary land.

The ambiguous and complex world imagined by Avery is structured in a particular way so that the audience is at the same time captivated and alienated, this by virtue of heterotopia that spatialises time and arouses the eternal question between “duty” and “identity”. Each element that Avery represents – a snake, a pyramid, a triangle – is an archetype, a message that -although born from abstract truth- is originated only in the artist’s mind and therefore can be represented and always interpreted in a metaphorical and analytical key. After “The Islanders: An Introduction”, title of his first exhibition in which Avery presented his Universe (at Parasol Unit Foundation for Contemporary Art, London) with “Onomatopoeia: part 1”, at Plateau/Frac Ile-de-France, Kunstverein Hannover; and “Onomatopoeia part 2: The Port at EX3, Florence, Avery has continued on describing the developments concerning his Island and its inhabitants. In the exhibition at Galleria S.A.L.E.S., 10 new drawings and several new sculptures, will lead the audience to the discovery of previously unpublished episodes and peculiar characters that belong to the extravagant and imaginative world of The Islanders.
