An Installation by Bill Davies at 24HR Art
29 November  14 December
Artist's floor talk - Sat 7 Dec at 12pm
NTU Graduate Prize winner Bill Davies presents his first solo show at 24HR
Art. Davies's work traverses the interface between drawing, painting and
sculpture as he creates an installation using huge rolls of paper. He works
on both sides of the rolls, using brooms, ropes, mops and brushes to create
luscious black and white surfaces. These rolls of paper then become
ambiguous objects that inhabit the walls, slipping off onto the floor, and
turning into sculptural constructions commanding their own space. These
constructions are formed in an intuitive, almost haphazard way.
In the Undone catalogue from a recent group exhibition in Bali, Anne Ooms
writes of Bill Davies work: " The finished rolls become majestic, unprecious
objects, torn and creased in the making, their weight and size determining
how they hang on/off the wall and unroll across the floor".
Davies' work is very process driven and performative. Chance and accident
play a big part in his work both in the mark-making and in the formation of
the constructions. The work inhabits the cracks between disciplines,
creating slippage and a dialogue between two and three dimensional space.
The artist states: "One could say subject matter of common experience is
needed as a starting point for a work of art. For me, that starting point is
the first mark expressed on the surface of the ground. There is no
preconceived plan other than to mark the paper".
