Drawings, Collages and Book Drafts. This exhibition is the largest display of works on paper by the artist. Her impressive drawings have an experimental character, nevertheless they often systematically deal with central questions about her oeuvre and document main topics like "mask and face" or "dream and conscience". References to a number of Trockel's works can be found in the microcosm of her drawings which have become both springboard and experimental space for her artistic practice.

Since Rosemarie Trockel became prominent with her drawings, objects and “knitted pictures” in Cologne and Bonn in the early 1980s, she has gained much recognition worldwide and today counts among the
most important artists of her generation. In addition to
the famous wool and hot plate works, today her œuvre
also includes videos, ceramics and object assemblages.
Despite this impressing diversity of media, drawing has
always been a central constant. Rosemarie Trockel already drew as a young student and during her studies
at the Kölner Werkschulen drawing became her defining
artistic medium. Therefore, drawing plays an important
role within the development of the œuvre and it is not
surprising at all that it is the creative starting point for
many paintings, objects and even videos. References to
a number of Rosemarie Trockel’s works can be found in
the microcosm of her drawings which have become
both springboard and experimental space for her artistic practice. More than any other medium drawing
proves the artist’s motivation stemming from her wish
for self-discovery and self-determination.
The exhibition, which is the largest display of works on paper by Rosemarie Trockel to date, has been realized
in close cooperation with the artist and Kunstmuseum
Basel and shows more than 200 drawings, collages and
book drafts. Rosemarie Trockel’s impressive drawings
have an experimental character, nevertheless they often
systematically deal with central questions about her
œuvre and document main topics like “mask and face”
or “dream and conscience”. Her book drafts, which were
presented in public for the first time only a few years
ago, put to test the dialog between language, image
and writing and therewith possess discursive qualities.
They reveal much about Rosemarie Trockel’s artistic
process and function as an archive of ideas which the
artist still draws inspiration from today. Since 2004,
collages have become a distinct part of Rosemarie
Trockel’s œuvre and allow her to combine drawings
and documents from different creative periods in order
to create new compositions. Thus, it is especially the
collages that make clear the importance of drawing
within Rosemarie Trockel’s œuvre.
The exhibition has been organized by Kunstmuseum Bonn and Kunstmuseum Basel.
A catalog published by Hatje Cantz with essays by Christoph Schreier, Anita Haldemann, Brigid Doherty and Gregory Williams will be available at a price of 39,80 Euros.
