Curators: Roland Nachtigäller (Marta Herford), Dr. Thomas Niemeyer (Marta Herford)

At the threshold to the 20th century art began to discover numerous new options for the wider distribution of images. Traditional artisan techniques such as wood engraving, copper engraving and lithography were refined and advanced. They were joined by modern technologies for print and reproduction such as photography and offset, which, thanks to numbering and signature achieved a value almost on a par with the original. Yet not only the individual image gained new forms of expression. Increasingly, artists began to experiment with work series, variations and narratives, often in collaboration with authors. As a result, a wealthy culture of artistic publications emerged, which as original prints in exclusive limited editions and precisely in a highly personal, indeed private handling, develop an extraordinary impact.

With over 40 high-calibre, and occasionally rare portfolios and artist editions the exhibition on the Lippold floor of Marta Herford offers a fascinating tour through the history of art in the last 100 years.
