Playback is a project by London-based artist Emma Smith, which explores tacit knowledge, intuited response and behavioral adaptations within the locality of The Showroom. Using storytelling as a form through which to share knowledge, the project has been developed through a series of research workshops in which tales are collected and exchanged, and turned into a series of script components: settings, scenarios and characters.
Playback is a project by London-based artist Emma Smith, which explores tacit
knowledge, intuited response and behavioral adaptations within the locality of
The Showroom. Using storytelling as a form through which to share knowledge,
the project has been developed through a series of research workshops in which
tales are collected and exchanged, and turned into a series of script
components: settings, scenarios and characters.
Collaborative processes are at the heart of this project, as Emma Smith has
worked with local groups of students to respond to narratives embedded in The
Showroom’s immediate neighbourhood. A research team that includes pupils from
Quintin Kynaston School is integral to the project; gathering narratives with
local groups in the area and through street interviews with members of the
public, and working closely with the conceptual development of the scripts.
Twenty fictitious monologues will be displayed in the gallery, which will be
set up as a reading room and performance space. The public are invited to
construct their own short plays and to play a role in the unfolding narratives.
A series of events are scheduled throughout the exhibition period for members
of the public to enact the work within larger groups.
Events:
21st June Private View including a performance by DreamArts
23rd June Public Relations discussions – Part 3: Citizenry
30th June Public Relations discussions – Part 4: Place Making
3rd July Public performance of the work by DreamArts
