The gallery presents two projects by artist: 'Who am I?' an humanitarian and educational project with the girls in Nairobi, and 'Self' at 2nd floor.
"Who am I?"
This unique project by CARE, combining humanitarian and educational objectives with the art education of a group of football players aged twelve to fifteen has immediately caught my attention. Having taught art education in a previous career, I have always considered my work as a galerist an educational task, and I consider it a great challenge to contribute to this venture.
About a year ago, this experiment was set up at Gallery Clairefontaine "in theory", during many discussions between Anton Markmiller from the CARE-side who communicated with Auma Obama, the artist Isabelle Federkeil, who was to do the field work with the girls in Nairobi, and myself as the person who would give the project a professional face, and an art space to show their work to the public. As with all ambitious projects, this inter-disciplinary undertaking has had to undergo many changes to adapt to real world circumstances.
The Kenyan environment of the aspiring "artists to be" has set the pace for our European vision and speed. For Isabelle, the careful and cautious guidance of the girls by Auma Obama made it possible to establish an atmosphere of trust and friendship with the girls. Their curiosity to learn how to freely express themselves is shown through their statements on the following pages and will be explored further during future workshops in Nairobi.
