The Shadow Line
“One goes on. And the time, too, goes on--till one
perceives ahead a shadow-line warning one that
the region of early youth, too, must be left be-
hind.”
J. Conrad, The Shadow-Line: A Confession (1917)
Inspired by the very famous short novel by Joseph Conrad, this exhibition aims to provoke reflections on the obscure region called the Shadow Line. The novel approaches the question of looking inside the individual at the mix of feelings, dreams, and illusions that seek to negotiate the contradictory directions of time. How can we identify and reconcile the illusions and (un)certainties which govern our conceptions of self in the face of this ever elusive progression and recession of time? Can and should our unbounded fantasies of self somehow be saved from the impositions of this Shadow Line, an illusion perhaps in itself? The dilemma is too complicated for us to offer solutions here. The Shadow Line, however, provides an interruption within a single day and space for participants to confront such considerations.
The artists represented within this show were called to make a statement regarding their relationship to this topic and its premises. Does anyone still think that art can offer an alternative to the Shadow Line? Can we, through art, exceed our small notions individuality and create a new line out of the shade? Do art and dreams still have something in common?
As in the past two appointments (Strait is The Gate and Brooklyn Boudoir), the set involves a New York alternative space, this time the Cultural and Educational Center Clemente Soto Vétez, hidden in the Lower East Side crossroads of atmospheres. Beyond white washed galleries and fancy locations, we aspire to secure contact with the substances of creation in a more private and visceral way, believing that works of art are more important than the aesthetic of precious display.
The eight artists involved in this project come from different places, stories, and languages. Their research and practice cover a wide spectrum of art methods, including painting, sculpture, photography, sound, video, and installation. Conceived as an extemporary event created under everyone’s eyes, the public is welcomed to interact, touch, listen, and look through this deep moment of thought.
