The 2011 edition of SH Contemporary - the most prestigious contemporary art fair in mainland
China - will take place from September 8th to 10th, with preview on the 7th, in downtown
Shanghai, at the extraordinary Shanghai Exhibition Center, and with a joint 4-day programme of
openings, studio visits and events, in cooperation with the city’s leading galleries and cultural
initiatives.
Mirroring the Asia Pacific art systems in the city that is the hub of the region, the fair highlights
the work of galleries that promote innovative practices and research and nurture the creative
movements that are crossing China and Asia, changing the global cultural landscape.
Under the new direction of Massimo Torrigiani, the 2011 edition is organized into 2 main
sections, providing visitors with a selection of cutting-edge and emerging art, including video,
film, photography and new media.
1. The Art Show, for selected established galleries, and a New Entries section for emerging art
and photography galleries, participating to the fair for the first time.
2. SH Contemporary Projects, organized in cooperation with Arthub Asia and including 3
different curatorial platforms:
- Hot Spots: large scale works produced for the spaces of the fair.
- First Issue, featuring Asia Pacific artists who had their first show in 2010-2011.
- The Video Lounge, co-hosted by Leap magazine, one of the most important publications on
Chinese Contemporary Art.
Moreover, SH Contemporary 2011 will host the launch of the new Asia Pacific Art Photography
Prize - for established and new artists presented by their galleries - awarded by an international
jury of photographers, editors, curators and critics.
SH Contemporary will be once again as Alexandra Munroe - senior curator on Asian Art at the
Solomon Guggenheim Museum in New York - described it: “messier, edgier, younger, and more
experimental” than any other Asian art fair.
SH Contemporary is organized by BF International Fairs, a Bolognafiere Group company, in
cooperation with Shanghai International Cultural communication Association (SICCA), Shanghai
Art Fair Organization Committee and Eastern Shanghai International Culture Film & Television
Group. Bolognafiere Group is one of Europe's leading fair organizers and experts in large-scale
exclusive lifestyle fairs. Headquartered in Bologna, Italy, it has branches in the US, Russia and
China, where it has become one of the main foreign trade show organizers.

professionals, also from institutions like the Cafa and Today Art museums (Beijing), Fukuoka
Asian Art Museum, Tate Modern (London), Moma and Guggenheim museums (New York),
