The 'Sensory Deprivation' of the show's title, refers to the self-inflicted or enforced isolation of the mind in a darkened room, or perhaps even a floatation-tank. These are restful but also hallucinatory spaces. Jensen's work brings together material as varied as science fiction, discarded decorative items, defunct technology and folklore.
PETER BERGMAN is delighted to present Daniel Jensen’s second solo show
at the gallery.
Daniel Jensen’s latest sculptures are like creatures wanting to speak
for themselves - but what can they speak of? They are otherly beings and
have no story. They have emerged, both as objects and spirits, to
command our attention and sympathy. They test our own sense of belonging
by provoking negative judgements, and so challenge our own human veneer
and a deeper idea of ourselves.
The sculptures represent a longing for intimacy as much as repressed
feelings of self-loathing, and so are difficult to ignore, emotionally
as well as intellectually. They are the inhabitants of the unconscious
now summoned to order. Even though they may seem primitively formed from
nature’s leftovers, they have emerged out of this darkness with hidden
smirks. Maybe because they know of their own insignificance, or maybe
because they are the rulers of a kingdom invisible to us.
The ‘Sensory Deprivation’ of the show’s title, refers to the
self-inflicted or enforced isolation of the mind in a darkened room, or
perhaps even a floatation-tank. These are restful but also hallucinatory
spaces. The title could also be said to point towards an origin for
these creatures; a place where warmth, light and touch are transformed
into an infinite cosmos-like darkness.
Daniel Jensen’s work brings together material as varied as science
fiction, discarded decorative items, defunct technology and folklore.
With this culture on board, it encircles and lands at the edge of
something we still might call Nature.
