The artist weaves her lifelong memories within a fictional narrative to create Jungle Sweat, Roseate, a video piece and installation on view throughout the Main House. Fisher's ongoing exploration of nature and our desire to tame it comes into focus, where the imposition of formal architecture on a native landscape presents striking contrasts.
The Contemporary Arts Project (Cap) is a commission program that invites artists to develop site-specific work inspired by Vizcaya, a public museum and National Historical Landmark. The program is intended to reinvigorate Vizcaya with the creative exchange that characterized its foundation, engaging artists whose practice can establish a dialogue or a critique with the physical and cultural contexts of the place.
From sculptor Alexander Stirling Calder, who created the striking figures that adorn the barge, to painters John Singer Sargent and Gari Melchers, who were extended house guests of Vizcaya's owner, James Deering, the estate has been a source of inspiration to artists since its very inception. Through the Contemporary Arts Project (CAP), Vizcaya continues Deering's patronage by reaching out to the artistic community-both locally and nationally-to offer artists the opportunity to explore our resources and interpret them in new ways.
Each year two artists are invited by an advisory committee to immerse themselves in Vizcaya's grounds and collections and create work in response to that experience.
South Florida native Naomi Fisher weaves her lifelong memories of Vizcaya within a fictional narrative to create Jungle Sweat, Roseate, a video piece and installation on view throughout the Main House. Fisher's ongoing exploration of nature and our desire to tame it comes into focus at Vizcaya, where the imposition of formal architecture on a native landscape presents striking contrasts. In Jungle Sweat, Roseate, a female character stumbles upon Vizcaya from the depths of the mangroves, covered in the residue of nature. Fisher tells the fantastical story of the woman's experiences in this new environment and her struggles to dethrone the "civilized" Lady of the House.
Naomi Fisher is an artist whose practice encompasses live performance, photography, painting and works on paper. Fisher has exhibited nationally and internationally and is a recipient of a 2008 Knight Arts Challenge Grant from the John S. & James L. Knight Foundation. She co-founded and jointly directs the Bas Fisher Invitational, an artist-run space in Miami.
