The latest “Salon for Art Collectors†debuts with exciting works that bring to life two important themes: eroticism and romanticism. Vanessa Suchar presents a couple of talented emerging artists for this new exhibition, which opens on January 22, 2003. Stéphane Mehl, an innovative artist, surprises the viewer by combining distinctive wallpapers with provocative images while Hervé Saint-Hélier, a French photographer, brings a great romantic atmosphere in his works.
“Entre ses lèvres, le bout nacré de ses dents blanches†(Madame Bovary, Gustave Flaubert)
Stéphane Mehl’s wallpapers are patterns on paper, fabric or plastic. He mixes French Empire style Jouy cloth with ‘pin-up’ images from the 1950-70’s. It represents a whole universe of French love scenes in the late eighteenth century while confronting the viewer with the image of the “woman-object†sourced from the American model after World War 2. Mehl’s unusual wallpapers can be exhibited in anyone’s living room to bring alive the unique combination of wit and, Anglo-Saxon/French cultures. Overall, Mehl’s works attempt to put into perspective the role of women in our society while also posing the poignant question “What is art to you?â€
Hervé Saint-Hélier captures moments in time through haunting photographs from his urban travels. He uses a camera like a brush, which makes the printing magical. In this new exhibition, Saint-Hélier conveys romanticism, a feeling that comes to the artist while walking around cities worldwide. A visionary who is now putting his talent into making short films for Lancôme and Armani, Saint Hélier reveals the incredible eye that he is renowned for in France, and now in the United Kingdom.
His art is featured in many private collections worldwide as his photographs take the viewer on a dream-like journey with powerful images that remain in the psyche over time.
Le Salon for Art Collectors showcases international emerging artists in private homes, an ideal setting that helps break through the many barriers surrounding contemporary art. Le Salon provides a comfortable learning environment while letting art-enthusiasts imagine how a piece of art would look in their own house. Prices are affordable and clearly marked, and the atmosphere is without the pressures of a gallery.
