Lyn Carter

Queen's Square Library, Cambridge

Columna. The artist creates sculptures out of fabric by constructing complicated 3 dimensional forms that look heavy and solid, although they are light and airy. Her work combines intricate textile surfaces with unusual forms.

comunicato stampa

Columna by Lyn Carter will be on exhibit at the Queen’s Square Gallery from November 5, 2011 – January 8, 2012. This exhibition is the first Canadian presentation of Columna and the Cambridge Galleries are very excited to be able to share this work with Waterloo Region.

Lyn Carter's work combines intricate textile surfaces with unusual sculptural forms. Deceptively, her works appear solid, while in truth they are hollow. The abstract forms seem to be shaped by the action of gravity on a stretch material, but this sensation is carefully constructed so that the effects of tension are mimicked rather than real.

Columna consists of four large scale pieces that reference architectural columns. The work reaches from floor to ceiling and was originally created for the 3rd Guangzhou Triennial in 2008 with the chosen shapes of the four columns reflecting historic Chinese vases.

Lyn Carter, who is a part of the Cambridge Galleries permanent collection, studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design and completed her MFA at York University in Toronto. She has also completed studies at the Banff Centre of Fine Arts, Alberta. Since 1986, Lyn Carter has exhibited her work extensively across Canada. She is an active educator, writer and lecturer on the visual arts. She currently lives and works in Orton, Ontario.

Cambridge Galleries are supported by membership, the City of Cambridge, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council.

The Queen’s Square Gallery will also host an artist talk with Lyn Carter on Saturday, December 10, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. This will mark the launch public art in addition to the release and sale of a publication that accompanies the exhibition. Lyn Carter will be available for autographs.
