Shimabuku. Man should try to avoid any contact with alien life forms
curator Chiara Parisi
Opening november 12th 2011 at 4pm
Born 1969 in Kobe, Japan, Shimabuku lives and works in Berlin. He creates videos, performances and installations rooted in everyday life and which are operating complex relationships between the notions of artist, work and audience. Shimabuku feeds his work from little stories that he heard here and there during his numerous trips. Those stories, through performances and the setting up of actions are staged with friends, unknown people, animals or even legendary characters in a universe of dream, magic, poetry and humour. A world where the detail, the sound of the words, the origin of the names are convoked to weave together a totally unique environment.
On Vassivière island, Shimabuku mixes an anthology of his works produced for the past fifteen years with new pieces where the details, the sound, the history of the words are conjured up to weave a truly unique world. In the heart of Aldo Rossi's buiding, the exhibition Man Should Try to Avoid Any Contact With Alien Life-forms becomes a playful and moving experiment where every single work is an opportunity to experience Shimabuku's universe.
For his solo exhibition at the Art Center in Vassivière, Shimabuku has conceived a book with the designer Hattori Kazunari which includes a conversation between Shimabuku and Chiara Parisi and a text by Pierre Joseph.

The concept of OTRO, its ovoid shape, the use of green phosphorescent concrete, its progressive discovery, and its integration in the island meadow make this artwork become an infinite land of investigation, that reflects all details like the light, its link with the site, the atmospheres, the dream and the fantastical.
In November, we will discover the concrete par of the skatepark with its own specificities, which already attracts the whole world, some prestigious clubs and great figures of the skate.

Berger & Berger and BuildingBuilding. Artists’ residencies
opening november 12th 2011 at none
The rehabilitation project of the Castle on Vassivière island as artists’ residences by the architects Berger & Berger BuildingBuilding is envisioned as an inner landscape. The contextual relationship to the landscape that the architects want to establish is first physical, they seek to emphasize the diversity of natures of light (natural, artificial) to create spaces.
These residences on Vassivière Island aim above all to be a place for carrying out and producing original projects, a place for research and reflection. The Art Center is not concerned with setting a policy of acquiring works which will be created during the artists’ stay, but aims rather to become an important platform for artistic production within a multidisciplinary perspective, a living space for meetings and research – a “center of Utopias”.
