Aprha Shemza / Sian Ellen

The Laws of Nature is a collaborative project and exhibition of work by Aphra Shemza and Sian Ellen.

It aims to highlight the significance of the natural world in relation to human advancement and illustrates
the fusion between synthesised and organic concepts and material within the world. The exhibition seeks
to remind the viewer that human evolution and technological progress originates from the natural world.
Both artists adopt this viewpoint; however they each take a different approach in their individual practice.

Aphra explores the connections between geometry and the human form. The human mind constructs
complex systems to understand nature. Within art, geometry and abstraction symbolize the ultimate
understanding of nature and the cosmos. She uses the human form to transmit these concepts, helping
the audience to understand the connection between themselves and the greater world around them.
Sian aims to communicate and highlight the evolution of human invention and investigates the way in
which humanity harnesses and manipulates nature; not just in a physical sense but also with the
immaterial elements of the world i.e. how humanity perceives and creates music from noise. It is a
realisation of the complexity of society and its technological and cultural advancements juxtaposed with
nature.

The two artists have collaborated on a site specific installation, which is a juxtaposition of synthetic and
natural materials. The concept behind the work is nature taking over technology and technology
consuming nature; an observation and metaphor for humanity's ability to destroy nature and nature's
ability to destroy humanity.
