comunicato stampa

The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea(NMOCA) will hold an exhibition of the artworks of photographer Limb Eung-sik, titled Lim Eung-sik: Art of Recording, Records of Art, at the National Art Museum, Deoksugung from December 21, 2011 to February 12, 2012.

The exhibition is being held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Lim Eung-sik, a photographer who contributed to modernizing photography in Korea both as a photography activist and as an educator. This photo exhibition will feature 200 of his photos, of which 160 are from the museum's collection and the other 40 are previously unseen photos from the collection of Limb Eung-sik's family.

The photographer seemed to have a special relationship with the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea. In 1957, Limb Eung-sik successfully held a photography exhibition, titled the Family of Man, organized by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The exhibition was held at the NMOCA which was located at Gyeongbokgung Palace at that time, receiving a favorable response from the public and exerting a powerful influence on Korean photography. In 1982, the NMOCA held an invitation exhibition of Limb Eung-sik's photos in what was its first photography exhibition. After the exhibition, he donated some 420 of his photos to the museum.

Before the Korean War, Korean photographic works were mainly art photos or beautiful pictorial photos - genres which had been popular since the Japanese colonial period. After following the Korean War as a war photographer, Limb Eung-sik became interested in the realistic photographic recording of facts, and later advocated a genre of photography called 'life-centered photography', which was a form of realism. Life-Centered Photography was based on humanism, and frankly expressed the realities of society and the lives of people. It gained great popularity among Korean youth and became the mainstream genre of Korean photography during the 1950s and 1960s.

This exhibition will feature a selection of Limb Eung-sik's art photos taken during the 1930s-40s, life-centered photos taken during the 1950s, when his name became known to the public, and a series of works titled "Korean ancient architecture" and "Korean artists", which were photographed under their respective themes and published in the magazine Gonggan. In particular, this exhibition will feature the Myeongdong photos, most of which are owned by the family of Limb Eung-sik and have never been released to the public. These photos are snap shots of Myeongdong and people taken by the photographer on his walks through Myeongdong. From this exhibition, the spectator will be able to see the changes that took place in Myeongdong from the 1950s to the 1990s. This exhibition will also include a collection of photos by his peers and students, which will be displayed under the title Dedication of Memory: Limb Eung-sik's portrait photos, as well as a collection of photos by artists, who worked together in Busan during the early days of his photography career, under the title A Small Exhibition of History: Limb Eung-sik and His Early Photos of Busan. This exhibition will provide a good opportunity for visitors to see the life of this unique photographer from a multi-dimensional perspective.

In conjunction with the exhibition, a series of academic seminars will be held jointly by the Museum of Photography, Seoul and Busan's Goeun Museum of Photography in January 2012.

The NMOCA has been planning several exhibitions to highlight artists who have played an important role in the history of Korean contemporary art. Through this exhibition, the spectator will be able to see the historical flow of Korean photography and the social and cultural aspects of each historical time from a multi-dimensional perspective.
