The Hood Gallery presents a unique opportunity to present ideas in
that most public of contexts, the streets of Los Angeles. As
President Bush pushes the U.S towards an invasion of Iraq, the
political implications of internal combustion become clear: that
which powers the (hood) gallery itself also drives U.S. foreign
policy. Feldman uses this mobile venue to make a simple proposition
about the price of oil.
And here the Hood Gallery finds itself in a quandary.
As you (who are looking) may have noticed the Hood Gallery operates
from the premises of a white, slightly battered 1990 Chevrolet Camaro
V8. This is NOT a car renown for its fuel efficiency.
Yet for the next month this gas guzzler will be polluting the streets
and freeways of Los Angeles with Oil = Blood graphics emblazoned
across its flanks.
As this astronomical fuel consumer, the camaro, built in Los Angeles,
assists the United States in gaining it's position as the world's
number one fuel consumer and polluter, the Hood gallery stares down
the same barrel of hypocrisy that so epitomizes the USA's grand
standing and politicking. Gradually we come to realize that the
choices we make that are concerned with pleasure and excess and
consumption have a price higher and far more reaching than the dent
to our bank account.
