Approaching the construction of each sculpture loosely and with spontaneity Rosen uses clay in its soft, malleable state, or fired into hardness, to build dynamic, organic, abstract compositions that suggest lush gardens, floral bouquets, tendril sea forms reaching toward light, or fat coils, stacked, wrapped or looped.

Opening March 6, Thursday, 5:30 to 7:30 PM
Exhibition ends April 5, Saturday, 2003
"Annabeth Rosen, New Sculpture" is to open Thursday, March 6, 2003 at the Nancy Margolis Gallery. Rosen, appointed to the Robert Arneson Endowed Chair at the University of California, Davis, is to exhibit her recent sculpture through April 5, 2003.
The surface textures are chalk white matts and blacks, glossy yellows, greens, patterned whites, or splashed color. Some are low square shapes, and others are tall and wide with narrow bases. The forms have nothing to do with delicacy, and are meant to have, and convey weight. Each work is literally packed full, and regardless of size, the impression is of power, abundance, and mass.
Rosen's vision is neither imitative nor derivative. Instead it is fresh, individual, and something she alone owns.
