FORMAT, QUAD and Light House, Wolverhampton, have collaborated to showcase some of the best emerging photographers and film-makers from the East and West Midlands. From a documentary exploring strong women and alcoholism in India to a fairytale hero conquering evil, this exhibition responds to QUADs upcoming film festival ID Fest which explores identity within film through the theme of ‘Heroes’.
QUAD and Light House were looking for existing photographic works and short films that broadly relate to the theme of ‘heroes’. This could be as straightforward as depicting the super heroics of costumed heroes or documenting simple or unnoticed acts of heroism that occur every day. Alternatively the bodies of work could explore the darker facets of this theme, focusing on the sinister acts of an anti hero or villain. East Meets West is keen to offer opportunities to artists within the regions and to support local talent. An open call for photographic and film submissions was sent out in Autumn 2011, and the selected artists were invited to exhibit their work, both wall based and on digital screens, at QUAD, Derby and Light House, Wolverhampton and take part in a peer to peer critiques and portfolio review sessions with film and photography industry experts.
East Meets West exhibition will tour to Light House in Wolverhampton in June to August 2012.
