In 2012 TEFAF will celebrate its 25th anniversary. Over
the years TEFAF Maastricht has come to be recognized
as the world’s leading art and antiques fair. As a visitor to
TEFAF Maastricht you will experience an event that offers an
unsurpassed choice of the very best in fine art.
TEFAF gives you a unique chance to view and to buy paintings
from gold grounds to Anish Kapoor as well as objects reflecting
6,000 years of excellence in the decorative arts.
A distinctive feature of TEFAF is its elegantly displayed genuine
masterpieces offered by more than 250 of the world’s most
prestigious art and antiques dealers from 16 countries.
TEFAF Maastricht has led the way in establishing proper
vetting procedures, and they are still considered the
most exacting. Twenty-nine vetting committees, made up of
172 international experts in every field of art represented at the
Fair, verify each and every object for quality, authenticity and
condition, so visitors can always buy with confidence.
For directors and curators of major museums, as well as private
collectors from around the world, a visit to TEFAF offers an
opportunity to acquire some of the finest works still in private
hands. Add an extra dimension to your TEFAF Maastricht
experience at During TEFAF, a festival of music, theatre and dance.
TEFAF Showcase gives recently established galleries the opportunity to participate in TEFAF Maastricht for one year and to gain experience of being part of an international fine art event. The pre-eminence of TEFAF among international art fairs has led to a long waiting list for potential exhibitors and TEFAF Showcase enables some of those keen to take part to do so. It also introduces visitors to the Fair to some of the most interesting emerging galleries from around the world.
'As the years progress, we find that the level of applicants is getting higher as people have realised that they need to be of a certain standard to be considered,' says Ben Janssens, Chairman of the Executive Committee of TEFAF, and a member of the selection panel, which consists of TEFAF members and independent art specialists. 'Showcase is now an established feature of the Fair and many visitors head straight for that section because they know that there are new dealers there.'
So far, twenty galleries have taken up this challenge, an experience universally regarded by them as very positive. Emanuel von Baeyer specializes in Old Master drawings, prints and paintings. He was among the first Showcase exhibitors in 2008. ’I can certainly say that Showcase exposed me to a wider audience and I received positive reactions to my gallery from various sources. It showed me that TEFAF is the definitive meeting point for most disciplines in the art trade and Showcase is helping it to continue its dynamic growth!’
Six galleries have been selected to take part in TEFAF Showcase 2012. The selected candidates, who will be taking part in TEFAF's Silver Jubilee edition, are specialists from a range of disciplines including modern jewellery, contemporary art, Old Master paintings and Japanese art. Three are from the United Kingdom, one from Italy, one from France and the sixth will become the first-ever TEFAF exhibitor from Hungary.
From its modest beginning as The Pictura Fine Art Fair in 1975, to its current position as the world's leading fine art fair, TEFAF Maastricht has always sought to lead the way and set the standards which others follow.
Apart from continually improving the breadth, quality and display of the items for sale, it has presented memorable exhibitions and made ground breaking initiatives in the way the fine art world does business.
It pioneered the music and lecture programmes and has taken the initiative on issues as diverse as VAT and vetting procedures. The pre eminent position of TEFAF Maastricht today is, as you will see, a result of much hard work over many years.
