The latest work by the Spanish artist Adrià Julià , Responses #2, explores the social and aesthetic marketing phenomenon of prefabricated houses in California as well as the search for the "White House for all!".
During the video, the spectator accompanies the visitors of a model-house on their tour, and also witnesses how they react towards the individual objects of the house. In the course of the viewing, the visitors desire to see their wealth materialize becomes obvious in their gestures and comments. Nonetheless, those individual ideas are in sharp contrast to the standardised concept of the prefabricated house, and thus have to be fitted into the existing frame. At the end of the day, the purchase of another ready-made product symbolizes just the next step towards happiness and wealth, as defined by the "American dream".
Responses #2 consists of a video projection, photographs that have been taken in different prefabricated-houses and drawings of the respective ground plans. In this exhibition, the space of a model-house is put opposite the gallery space. This creates a direct link between the objects of the house and the video installation as well as between the customers-visitors of the model-houses and the visitors-customers of the gallery. Moreover and as an aspect of the latter, Adrià Julià succeeds in elucidating the commercialisation of art. He does that by pointing out parallels between the visitors dealing with the product of the prefabricated house, and the gallery visitors reacting to the presented artworks.
