Laurent Mareschal

Marie Cini Gallery, Paris

Bureau d'echange. Not more than six new pieces were produced for this exposition. These pieces continue in many ways, the research that has already been initiated by the artist.

comunicato stampa

“Languages coded and ephemeral”, could be the subtitle of the first personal exhibition by Laurent Mareschal at Gallery Marie Cini. We can try to read in Braille, a QR code, in attempting to understand the stammering of a megaphone or even to follow the story of Jules and Jim through the choreography of three metronomes. Already on the street, we doubt the function of the place: Bureau d’échange (Exchange) reads neon in the window.

With Mareschal, the public is often invited to participate, even…to destroy the pieces! But above all it’s the alteration of language which unites the exhibition, the word play, the game between the words and their meaning. This could be a cold intellectual exercise, to be reckoned without humor and use of materials that fuel our senses. The artist also tends to minimalism, in many of his transient pieces of which there are many in his work. We remember particularily the ground made of Palestinian ceramics and fragrant spices which adorned the great hall of the CAPC this fall.

Mareschal, to move away from Palestine, Israel and the conflict which haunts his work, now takes a turn for the universal. A work at once universal and often intimately linked to the place where it is presented, which is one of his exhibitions major components. Also this neon, Bureau d’échange (Exchange), installed in the gallery window, instills in us a doubt: ‘’Bureau de change’’ (change), we got it, but ‘’d’échange’’ (exchange)?! Or also these stock stamps that shifts the typical business expressions (the gallerist will use them during the show): “avoir” (credit notes) becomes “à voir” (to see), " important " (important) becomes " impotent " (impotent), “devis” (estimate), “devils” (devils), etc. Everyday language is shifted, while giving an air of optical illusion.

Not more than six new pieces were produced for this exposition. These pieces continue in many ways, the research that has already been initiated by the artist.
Bureau d’échange (Exchange) is not just a word play, Marie Cini welcomes the public with an invitation to experiment with the pieces and answer to the questions, like Laurent Marechal on certain dates.

Laurent Mareschal was born in Dijon in 1975. He lives and works in Paris. He exhibits regularly in France and abroad, his work was notably shown at CAPC of Bordeaux (invited by the Van Abbe Museum), the Grand Palais, BPS 22 (Belgium), l’Espace Croisé, Le Fresnoy, Fondation Ecureuil, Ashdod Art Museum (Israel), the Chelouche gallery (Israel). The Ashdod Art Museum has just published his first monographic catalogue.

Gallery Marie Cini will present one of his videos, ‘’The Castle’’, at LOOP Video Art Fair (Barcelona) from May 30th to June 2nd.
