Two exhibitions

Rock Steady

Rock Steady is an exhibition about representation in painting, fabricated like-ness of source imagery and the quandary of re-presentation and simulacra. The sculptures are heavily process based, un-packing the steps of creating and our obsession in making what we fabricate around us appear raw and natural in our interiors. These painted sculptures contain a reflexive interplay between source material and the dilemma of ‘mechanical reproduction’ and the sensitivity of duplicating what is commonly overlooked

Rock Steady uses the space by placing these duplicates in proximity to each other. By replicating objects which exhibit visual indifference, there is a tension between the signifier and signified, the original and reproduction, the genuine and counterfeit; the work essentially becomes “re-made ready-mades”. The idea of appropriating the Other, such as the outside inside, or the exoticism of foreign objects which are mass produced and manufactures for cheap retail accessibility. The exhibition bears to question the act of painting from static imagery, realism and hyper-reality and imitating an original like that of a cast or mould.

Andie Tham completed a Bachelor Of Fine Art majoring in Painting at The Victorian College of the Arts and currently lives and works in Melbourne.
