The works in this exhibition are metaphors for the ephemeral in life. These still lives convey peace, magnificence, and a gratification to the spirit that human beings search for but do not take the time to see. Waid distills the essence of the still life and therefore life itself to create a minimal composition. The artist achieves this through her extraordinary gift of handling the subtlety of the medium.
PERENNIALS
The Nohra Haime Gallery is pleased to present the most recent work of Mary Joan Waid from April 9 thru May 3, 2003. The exhibition includes eight oils on canvas and four pastels.
Waid approaches the still life as a portrait, treating it through light and atmosphere. She draws from Vermeer's atmospheric use of light as well as Chardin's technical dexterity. The lush, rich colors show the vulnerability of life as each petal is depicted at a different stage - from blooming to decomposing.
Waid's works seem to cry out 'Restraint is power,' as color, hues of light and the presence of a new quiet metaphor seduce the spectator. They are meditations and as the title of the exhibition: 'Perennials' suggests, they represent the revival of nature and of the human spirit. These works are a meditation, a moment in time when we stop, feel and understand the power of nature and its effect on life.
Waid was born in Kansas and studied at Wichita State University. She has received numerous fellowships and awards and has been exhibiting since the 1960's. She was included in 'Silent Things, Secret Things: Still Life from Rembrandt to the Millennium' at the Albuquerque Museum. Waid's paintings are found in museums and public collections such as: the Art Institute of Chicago, the Grey Art Gallery and the National Academy of Design, New York; Chase, Citicorp, AT&T, Xerox.
