Area35 and Ninbella welcome you to the exciting and intriguing world of Australian Aboriginal Art and Artifacts. The art you can see here comes from remote centers within central Australia.
At the time of European settlement in Australia (1778), there were more than 200 Aboriginal nations, each with their own language, customs and defined territories. The Australian Aborigines are one of the oldest surviving races in the world, with almost 60,000 years of continuous history.
Dreaming is the core to understanding aboriginal art. Aboriginal people take Dreaming as the centre of their religion and life.
Some of the art here depicts stories that are handed down through many generations and is painted with strict totemic and kinship rules. Traditionally the Australian Aborigine’s art was executed as etchings in rock, drawings in sand, designs carved into wood and as paintings on rock, on wood and as body art.
Today the artists use many more mediums and art forms, including acrylic paint on canvas or linen, fabric, photographic works and multimedia.
