Stephen Haller Gallery is proud to present "Gregory Johnston: Superleggera"
surprising new sculptural pieces reflecting the artist’s life-long passion and devotion to
the motor car. The Superleggera Series is a study in gleaming color expressed in elegant
geometry evocative of the thrill of a remembered race.
In this newest series of work, Gregory Johnston is working with new materials and a
gleaming surface and lush palette of enamel on aluminum plates. He titles many of the
works with references to distinct motor car colors: Bahama Viper Tuerkis, Deutsche
Blau. Some even represent specific cars and drivers for the artist, and one is a perfect
study in shades of white.
Superleggera (super light in Italian) refers to an automotive construction technology
developed in Northern Italy. And for the artist it is a metaphor expressing the current
philosophy behind his work –a structural framework allowing for creative freedom and
innovative design - a perfect melding of aesthetics and technology.
The spirit of superleggera seeped into the artist’s consciousness a number of years ago
during an artist residency in Northern Italy. This concept combined with his life-long
passion for speed and all things automotive combined to inspire this new body of work.
This new series of sculptural paintings represents the maturing work of an artist The Wall
Street Journal heralded as “one of the emerging success stories of his generation.”
