21st edition of the contemporary art fair.Participating will be 98 outstanding galleries from Latin America, North America, and Europe, which will represent works by the most important contemporary artists. In the U-TURN Project Rooms by Mercedes-Benz, in the new area of the Arcos Dorados Solo Show and in Barrio Joven Chandon, the section in the fair devoted to emerging artists.
Over the last 21 years, arteBA has quickly evolved from being a fair for galleries to being one
of the main fairs in the region, becoming an essential event for artists, dealers, collectors,
critics, curators, museum directors and international cultural figures. With the aim of
furthering the growth of its contents, ensuring the quality of work exhibited, and keeping up
international standards, the exhibition infrastructure of the participating galleries this year will
be higher than ever, thanks to the generous support of the Government of the City of Buenos
Aires. Spread throughout the Green and Blue Pavilions of La Rural, the galleries will continue
to be the fair’s great protagonists. They will be distributed across the main exhibiting area, in
the U-TURN Project Rooms by Mercedes-Benz, in the new area of the Arcos Dorados Solo
Show and in Barrio Joven Chandon, the section in the fair devoted to emerging artists.
The 21st EDITION of arteBA will present the ninth edition of the arteBA-Petrobras Visual
Arts Prize: UNÁNIME (Unanimous). Under the direction of Victoria Noorthoorn (a
freelance curator based in Buenos Aires, Argentina), the prize has brought together Argentine
artists from all disciplines to explore the possibilities of collaboration and experimentation,
generating brand-new projects from the dialogue among three or more artists whose
collaboration was likewise taking place for the first time. And, in the same spirit, the Prize
gathered together a Selection Committee of intellectual creators each of whom is at the top of
his or her field, and challenged them to reach agreement in their decisions. The call was to
choose three projects in full unanimity. Out of the total of 150 proposals received, only three
received a grant of $20,000 (Argentine pesos) to produce their work and later exhibit it at
arteBA. Once these works are shown at the Fair, another Jury wil award the (non-acquisition)
Prize of $50,000 (Argentine pesos), that will be announced at the auditorium 18th MAY,
1.30PM. The Selection Committee was made up of the visual artists Fernanda Laguna and
Patricio Larrambebere, the writer and critic María Gainza, the writer and scholar Ana
Longoni, the freelance curator Javier Villa, writer Rubén Mira, and the theater directors and
playwrights Emilio García Wehbi, Mariana Obersztern, and Rafael Spregelburd.
The three projects chosen by the Committee are:
POP UP CARTOON presented by Emiliana Arias, Cecilia Lenardón, Silvia Lenardón, Guillermo
Martínez, Renata Minoldo, Sebastián Rosés and Luciano Schillagi.
SPLATTER MORFOGENÉTICO / ARLT MASCHINE presented by Silvina Aguirre, Laura
Bilbao, Roberto Conlazo and Lux Lindner.
LA MULTISECTORIAL INVISIBLE presented by Gustavo Doliner, Ana Gallardo, Lola Granillo,
Guillermina Mongan, Mariela Scafati and Elisa Strada.
arteBA is an exhibition platform for the artistic manifestations that reflect the current spirit. To
ensure the quality of what is shown and keep the fair aligned with international standards, for
each new edition a Selection Committee chooses a certain number of galleries for the main
area of the fair, galleries suited to the Fair’s approaches and aims. For arteBA 2012, the
Gallery Selection Committee has been presided over by Laura Batkis (art critic, professor,
and freelance curator, Buenos Aires, Argentina) and made up of Sonia Becce (freelance
curator, Bs. As., Argentina), Luisa Duarte (art critic and freelance curator, Sao Paolo, Brazil)
and Estela Totah (director of the Del Infinito gallery, Buenos Aires, Argentina), representing
Argentine galleries.
After its first successful edition, U-TURN Project Rooms by MERCEDES-BENZ, will be a
presence a second time, expanding its goal of bringing the best in international art before the
Latin American public. Abaseh Mirvali (based in the USA), is once again in charge of the
selection of galleries, artists, and the individual pieces to exhibit, pieces she has specially
chosen to create a solid, unified project. The second edition of U-TURN will bring together the
work of 24 artists from fourteen countries, represented by twelve galleries from Argentina,
Brazil, Spain, Mexico, Denmark, Switzerland, Colombia, and Germany.
Year after year, Barrio Joven Chandon has been spurring on the production of young artists,
supporting efforts that are new, different or alternative to the traditional patterns of exhibiting
and selling works of contemporary art. In this way, it encourages the growth and
professionalization of the spaces/galleries in the cultural scene. For arteBA 2012 it has
brought together young Argentine and foreign galleries/spaces that represent mainly Latin
American artists to present at Barrio Joven Chandon. The Selection Committee for Barrio
Joven Chandon 2012 comprised Akio Aoki (director of the gallery Vermelho, São Paulo,
Brazil); Diego Bianchi (artist, Bs. As., Argentina) and Eva Grinstein (freelance curator, Bs.
As, Argentina), which chose seventeen galleries/spaces to exhibit the works of Latin American
artists. The spaces chosen for Barrio Joven Chandon are from the Argentine provinces of
Buenos Aires, Salta and Santa Fe and form other countries such as Brasil, Chile and United
States. As it has for the past eleven years, Chandon will, behind closed doors, buy the first
work, for MAISON MOET HENNESSY ARGENTINA, and will give the official welcome to Barrio
Joven Chandon, which this year will be highlighting an outstanding project by Pablo Reinoso,
an Argentine artist residing in France.
For the third consecutive year, Arcos Dorados joins arteBA in supporting Latin American artistic
production. The company is committed to offering a platform for exhibition of the region’s
contemporary art production. arteBA is increasing its outreach with the inauguration of the
Solo Show section at the Arcos Dorados Latin American Painting Contest with the
participation of those galleries representing each artist. Pablo León de la Barra (Mexican
freelance curator, critic, researcher and editor) was responsible for selecting five young artists
from Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Peru and Venezuela for this new format. The young talents will
compete with one work of art each, for the Prize of US$ 15,000. They will also participate with
their respective galleries in the new Latin American Painting Solo Show section, when the
galleries will be able to display their most current production. The public may also vote for
their favorite work of art, among the five competing paintings, until May 21st, either online at
http://www.arteba.org/concursoarcosdorados, or at the Arcos Dorados booth at arteBA 2012.
The winner will be defined by the votes of a jury, composed of an art collector, an art critic, a
gallery owner, an Arcos Dorados representative and the public. The announcement of the
winner will be on May 21st, at 4PM, and the winning painting will become part of the Arcos
Dorados collection.
The artists and galleries invited to this third edition of the contest are:
CHRISTIAN VINCK (VENEZUELA) – Oficina #1/Carmenaraujo Arte (Venezuela)
IOSU ARAMBURU (PERU) – 80 m2 Arte & Debates (Peru)
LUCAS ARRUDA (BRAZIL) – Mendes Wood (Brazil)
MANUELA VIERA-GALLO (CHILE) – Isabel Aninat (Chile)
PIA CAMIL (MEXICO) – La Central (Colombia)
The Culture Ministry of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires will once more sponsor the
OPEN FORUM 2012, which be held with open, free admission in the fair’s auditorium. The
programming will include Prime Time, which will be exclusively dedicated to leading collectors
on the international scene and important players in the contemporary market: Art
Conversation, a new series of intimate conversations between important Latin American artists
and Argentine art critic Alicia de Arteaga, as well as Special Presentations. Prime Time has
already received confirmation of the participation of Laura Batkis (Argentina), Moisés Cosio
(Mexico), Pablo León de la Barra (Mexican, living in London), Maja Hoffman (Switzerland), Inés
Katzenstein (Argentina), Jay Khalifeh (Brazil), Abaseh Mirvali (USA, Americas, Berlin), Sandra
Mulliez (France), Guillermo Navone (Argentina), Victoria Noorthoorn (Argentina), Patricia
Vergez (Argentina), Catherine Petitgas (french, residing in London) and Patrizia Sandretto
(Italy).
The verification committee of arteBA 2012 will be made up of specialists in art authentication
for the art works of Banco Ciudad, the stand of which will exhibit 24 works by the Argentine
photogapher Marcos López. Important news for the cultural heritage of Argentina is Banco
Ciudad’s announcement of its acquisition of an exceptional set of 56 works, paintings and
sculptures, by renowned artists – a large majority of them Argentine – which over two decades
ago were part of a foreign private collection. Among these works making their way home are
Petorutti’s first cubist work, pieces by Berni, Xul Solar, Victorica, Lacámera, Quinquela,
Spilimbergo, and Torres García, among others. The return to their country of origin of these
works reaffirms Banco Ciudad’s commitment to art, to the preservation, defence, and recovery
of our cultural sovereignty.
For the fifth year in a row, Patio Bullrich will also be a part of arteBA. Its artistic and cultural
stimulus plan consists of developing an Argentine artist’s special project. After its series of
three editions of well established artists working within the conceptual framework of Pop art,
Patio Bullrich, for its 2012 edition, has changed its stakes and invited the artist Nushi
Muntaabski to execute the work “Sueños de Vidrio” (Dreams in Glass).
The National Cultural Secretariat maintains a firm federal-level commitment to Argentine
art, which is renews through multiple activities, among them, participation in special events
such as arteBA. At this edition of the Fair, it will participate by showing works from the
Collection of the National Historical Museum, pieces of great symbolic and iconographic value
to our nation.
For the third year in a row, Citi will be a presence at arteBA, and in its role as Silver Sponsor
will host the Private Viewing, offering its guests the opportunity to visit arteBA and acquire
works before the Fair has opened officially. Within this framework, it will conduct special VIP
part of its collection. The chosen work will be on display during the fair within the company’s
space. On the other hand, to fulfill its aim of bringing art closer to its clients, Citi will be the
official card of this 21st edition of the fair, and offer benefits such as two-for-one admission
tickets and a 20 percent discount on the catalog.
As part of its “Open Air Arnet Prize”, the Arnet stand will present the visiting public with three
playful workshops and the three winners from the past editions of the Prize: Marcela Cabutti,
Juan Carlos Ochoa, and Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, with the aim of imagining a sculpture for the
fourth edition of the Arnet Prize in Rosario. Likewise, by way of a tactile screen, each user will
be able to create different forms, textures and colors to give his or her virtual project
materiality and great veracity. The sketch for each project, as well as the earlier plan, will be
permanently recorded and projected at the Arnet Space.
La Rural renews its commitment to acquiring works of art, giving continuity to its program
Impulsarte, the company’s Contemporary Art Stimulus Program. Through a committee
especially designated for this purpose, La Rural will choose from among works shown at arteBA
2012, which will go on to form part of the company’s art collection.
On the premise “because we also listen to art,” LAN, arteBA’s official airline, will be present at the
fair for the sixth year in a row, offering its free audio-guide service for visitors who wish to take a
different route through the fair. For this new edition Florencia Braga Menéndez was asked by the
airline to devise the cultural tour that has already became a classic part of the fair. As an
innovation this year, LAN will be presenting in its space at the fair a series of headphones
intervened in by the well-known artists Marcela Mouján, Edgardo Giménez and Rafael González
Moreno. These headphones will be exhibited alongside works chosen by each of these artists that
inspired their interventions. Marcela Mouján will present an extension of a work from her
collection “Pampaparaiso”; Edgardo Giménez will show his intervened-in headphone inspired by
his work “Gato Secretaire,” and Rafael González Moreno will show his extension from his work
“Los girasoles de Monet” (Monet’s Sunflowers), which will be worked on with recycled materials,
in this way aligning itself with the commitment LAN itself maintains to the environment and
sustainable tourism.
At arteBA 2012, Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 will once again continue to pay homage to
Argentina’s great and internationally known artists. On this occasion, the AA2000 ArtSpace
stand will present an exhibition of the prestigious sculptor Julio Le Parc. On view there will be
two of his most important works, archive material, photos, videos, books, and hitherto
unpublished interviews. In this way, in keeping with its policy of Entrepreneurial Social
Responsibility, AA2000 continues to promote and stimulate national art and culture, bringing
the works of well established artists before the public.
For arteBA 2012, Nespresso is joining the fair as a new Silver Sponsor. Its space at the fair
will be intervened in by the artist Verónica Di Toro, and within this artistic setting, the
company will offer its "Art Café," a series of interviews with well known and long established
artists.
During the Fair the fifth edition of the In Premio En Obra, created by Juan Cambiaso and
dedicated to younger artists. It is a significant initiative for distinguishing emerging art
production within the ‘young/youth neighborhood’ Barrio Joven Chandon. The prize consists in
awarding participating artists and/or gallery projects a cash award contributed by independent
and disinterested donors. As an innovation this year, the “En Obra” (In Progress) Prize will
present additional awards: one of the winning artists will have a solo show at the Recoleta
Cultural Center and the winning gallery project will be able to join in on sessions evaluating
projects and commercial initiatives. EN OBRA is an initiative fostering the habit of disinterestly
supporting the visual arts, and rewarding young artists in Barrio Joven for their creative talent.
One of the most important activities in the fair are the Museum and Corporation Acquisition
Programs, which raise high expectations among the viewing public, the participants in the fair,
local and international collectors, and the media that cover the contents of arteBA.
This new edition of the Fair will once again enjoy the continued presence of the arteBA-Zurich
Matching Funds Program, which in this, its eighth edition, will allow the Museum of Fine Arts
of Salta, Malba–Constantini Foundation in the city of Buenos Aires, and the Castagnino+macro
Museum of Rosario to add to their collections. To each of these three important museums,
Zurich will reserve the sum of Arg$30,000 (Argentine pesos) and, in turn, each museum must
match or exceed this sum with funds of its own.
