A Canada-Finland exchange exhibition about truth and communication
Opening: Thursday, April 24 at 7PM
Talk with the curator and artists, April 24 at 5:30PM
In the fall of 2002, Gallery 101 and FRAME (Finnish Fund for Art Exchange) teamed up to produce an exchange of exhibitions to showcase the work of emerging artists. Identical calls-for-submissions were circulated in Canada and Finland to artists whose works deal with issues of mass media, telecommunications, and documentary. Tomorrow's News at Gallery 101 presents the Finnish response to this call.
Curated by Paula Toppila, Tomorrow's News (Ottawa version) presents the work of seven Finnish artists: Jari Silomäki, Minna Heikinaho, Iconoclast, Jiri Geller, Juha Mäki-Jussila, Lena Séraphin, and Juha Huuskonen. These artists' approaches vary, ranging from the manipulation of existing news material to interviews and visual material produced by the artists themselves. The appropriation of advertising formats, the contemplation of the role played in our lives by virtual reality and computer games, and the status and meanings of fact and fiction are also highlighted. This exhibition casts an ironic eye on the commercial production of the work of art and the susceptibility of the recipient to news and TV entertainment. The artists share an emphasis on individuality, personal choice, freedom of expression, and the importance of dialogue.
Works in this exhibition include sculpture, photography, video installation and new media. Most of the artists will be at Gallery 101 to install their own work and to meet with other artists and curators from the Ottawa-Gatineau region.
Before the opening of the exhibition on April 24, the public and press are invited to speak with the artists about their work. Talks begin at 5:30PM, and the opening begins at 7PM. Admission is free.
In May, Gallery 101 sends six Canadian artists to Finland to present their work in the Helsinki version of Tomorrow's News. These artists include: Milutin Gubash (Vancouver), Luis Jacob (Toronto), Jason St-Laurent (Ottawa), Tagny Duff (Montréal), Isabelle Hayeur (Montréal), and Tim Dallet (Halifax). These artists show their work at the galleries Hippolyte and Muu, both not-for-profit artist-run centres like Gallery 101. In 2004, Gallery 101 will publish a catalogue to this exchange.
