Dust in Their Eyes. The exhibition explores a temporary deflection of being able to see someone intently and examines the transient barriers we create between ourselves and the world.

comunicato stampa

Eleven is pleased to present Natasha Law’s latest exhibition Dust in Their Eyes. In her bold signature style, she creates sequences with her figures developing a sense of movement across her new works. She captures her models in a moment of action whether it be removing an article of clothing or exhaling a plume of smoke. Individually each work is striking and collectively they transport us into her narrative.

Dust in Their Eyes explores a temporary deflection of being able to see someone intently and examines the transient barriers we create between ourselves and the world. From blowing into a piece of bubble gum or puffing on a cigarette these actions act as momentary deterrents creating distance between us and others. She also capitalises on the anonymity of the figures. A face obscured by hair or a back slightly turned, she relies on the viewer’s own voyeuristic fascination to draw them into her intriguing vignettes. Employing varying degrees of concealment she masks the true nature of the narrative taking place.

These new works reveal an increased exposure of layers in her technique. In Pink, Down she leaves slivers of the aluminium sheet exposed to reveal the raw surface and annunciate layers of built up paint. Similarly with her works on paper she creates a strata of different mediums. Starting with drawing she then adds gloss paint and works directly onto a glass panel layered over the work. The synthesis of these different grounds creates an almost three dimensional effect accentuating the movement of her forms.

It is her protracted process which creates the vibrancy in her works. She often begins with line drawings from her modelling sessions and determines where to zoom in and crop the image before transcribing the lines onto the aluminium panel. She then applies coat upon coat of household gloss paint in a completely dust-free environment to achieve the flawless almost liquid like surface which has become part of unique style.

Natasha Law was born in 1970. She lives and works in London. Her recent exhibitions include Close/Closer, Eleven, London (2010), I Put My Finger on Your, Paul Smith Gallery, Tokyo, Japan, (2009); Matches Art Project, Matches, London, (2008) and Romanticism Interrupted, The Viewing Room, Mumbai, India (with Natasha Kissell, 2008).
