La Nostra Terra

Stills, Edinburgh

The first UK season of Italian photography and video from the 1970s to today.

This project presents a landmark exhibition and season of events which introduce the school of Italian photography to the UK with works which redefine Italy’s natural and built environment in response to the profoundly transformative 'economic miracle'.

Twenty-seven photographs from Fondazione Fotografia are exhibited at Stills by artists including Franco Fontana (1933), Guido Guidi (1941), Luigi Ghirri (1943–92), Gabriele Basilico (1944), Walter Niedermayr (1952), Olivo Barbieri (1954), Paola De Pietri (1960), Luca Andreoni (1961) and Francesco Jodice (1967).

These artists’ works define the Italy that we recognise today in the years after Italy’s ‘economic miracle’, and their influence can be seen in the works of generations of artists and photographers retaining leading positions throughout the world.

A programme of video works by Italian artists are shown in Stills’ Film Lounge and will be curated by Careof DOCVA, Milan, curator Valentina Bonizzi and Turin's annual programme TORINOver.

Emerging Practice Wednesday 9 May 2012, 11.30am - 1.30pm
A chaired introduction to contemporary practice by Italian and Scottish photographers participating in Stills' AiR residencies which are artists' residential exchanges between Edinburgh and Modena, Italy.

Residences Wednesday 9 May 2012, 3.30pm -5.30pm
A chaired event with curators and artists discussing the merits and logistics of residential projects.
Curating Video archives and collections

Thursday 10 May 2012, 11.30am - 1.30pm
An introduction to the collections of Careof DOCVA, Milan, Rewind UK and The Agent Ria and their utilisations within curatorial and educational contexts.
Landscape and Photography, Scotland and Italy

Thursday 10 May 2012, 3.30pm - 5.30pm
Participating speakers include Alexandra Tommasini (Courtauld Institute of Art), Francesca Lazzarini (Curator, Fondazione Fotografia, Modena, Itlay) and artist Alexander Maris (Scotland).

Presented in collaboration with Fondazione Fotografia - Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Modena and The Italian Cultural Institute, Edinburgh.
