New Paintings

Florence Lynch Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new paintings by Annette Bezor.

For her first one person show with the gallery Annette Bezor presents a series of recent paintings in which she juxtaposes a cool detached abstraction for the background in contrast with an expressive figuration for the foreground alluding to a narrative content. The paintings present sequenced images repeated with barely detectable contrasts and similarities, challenging the viewer to identify and decipher their individuality.

The size of the painted image is massively enlarged by comparison with the original image, as if under a magnifying glass. It appears that two renditions of each original have been made, but while they appear superficially the same, there are subtle but important differences between the two images constituting each pair. A viewer's preference for one version of an image over another parallels the process by which a viewer may find one person attractive and another not so attractive.

Repetition also suggests movement, as the human eye moves from one image to the next. This illustrates the way the slightest nuance has a major effect on our perception. The movement of the eye references the way film works - as a series of stills which, together, conveys action.

Born in Adelaide, South Australia, Bezor has exhibited in one person venues at the Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane; Greenaway Art Gallery, Adelaide; Robert Lindsay Gallery, Melbourne; Roslyn Oxley 9 Gallery, Sydney; Contemporary Art Centre, Adelaide; Luba Bilu Gallery, Melbourne, among others. Selected group exhibitions include the Grand Palais, Paris; National Art Gallery of Victoria; University of South Australia Art Museum; SH Ervin Gallery, Sydney. Her work is in many public and private collections among them, Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; ICI Collection; and Auckland City Gallery, New Zealand.

The exhibition is on view from May 22 to June 21, 2003.

An opening reception will be held at the gallery on Thursday, May 22, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11:00 to 6:00 p.m.
