comunicato stampa

Camberwell Space is proud to introduce this year’s winner of the Vanguard Prize, new artist and performer Le Fil with his debut solo exhibition 'Pop Sculpture: The Filosophy of Making'.

'Pop Sculpture: The Filosophy of Making' is a multi-disciplinary exhibition that places pop music into the gallery, presenting Le Fil's personal approaches to making art - from his renowned clay sculptures and performances to more recently, pop songs. Throughout his studio residency this year awarded by Vanguard Court, Le Fil has been crafting electronic dance-pop music infused with heavy industrial beats and melodic hooks; alongside creating performance art installations; and sculpting hand-made ceramic objects in his distinctive aesthetic of monochromatic palettes and futuristic geometric forms.

The culmination of Le Fil’s residency is a new sculptural installation that draws parallels between iconography and messages found in religious practice, pop culture, and the artist’s making process. His practice is a meeting point for genres and ideas; combining sculpture, music, fashion and performance into a visionary crossover art-pop spectacle. Le Fil demonstrates fluidity of boundaries and new ways of seeing both through his own androgynous identity and through his unique mix of disciplines, using them as a platform for his transformative journey into the sculptural and sonic world of pop music.

Biography:

Le Fil is a new and unsigned British male pop artist and performer. Born Philip Li from Huddersfield and graduated from BA (Hons) Ceramics at Camberwell College of Arts in 2009. The name Le Fil is an abbreviated version of the artist's name, whilst playfully referring to his androgyny through the French masculine appropriation of the term the girl (la fille). Translated in French, Le Fil means 'the thread' which the artist has taken to symbolise a continuing thread; or a train of thought that connects a multitude of ideas and disciplines.

Previous exhibitions and performances include: Germination: The Avant-Garden Body-Sculptures with LuckyPDF at The Barbican (2011), RE-MALE-D with London Drawing at Battersea Arts Centre and Camberwell Space's Intersecting Disciplines (2011) featuring selected alumni from twenty years of Ceramics at Camberwell College of Arts.
