La galleria Muratcentoventidue Artecontemporanea prosegue il suo programma espositivo con The Wonder of the I, la prima mostra personale in Italia di una giovane artista norvegese, Kristina Kvalvik.

La mostra è sostenuta da The Danish Arts Council e da The Office of Contemporary Art Norway a cui l’associazione rivolge il suo ringraziamento.

Nei paesi del Nord Europa l’uso del video da parte degli artisti appare massiccio e più che altrove caratterizzato da una pluralità di intenti ed esiti formali.
Protagonista di molti video è la natura vista a volte come grembo, altre come luogo minaccioso.
E la natura è al centro dell’ ultima ricerca di Kristina Kvalvik , messa in relazione con le caratteristiche e i limiti della vita dell’uomo contemporaneo.
I suoi lavori si concentrano su un tema, la rappresentazione di fenomeni naturali ed il rapporto uomo natura, che ha una lunga tradizione nel documentarismo oltre che nel campo dell'arte: la natura è stata in particolare un motivo dominante e soggetto nella storia dell'arte nordica attraverso il ruolo centrale svolto dal genere della pittura di paesaggio nel XIX secolo.

Nell’arte contemporanea l'esplorazione di questo tema ha dato luogo a un interesse marcato per l’ambiente, inteso sia come ecologia sia come relazione tra l'individuo e lo spazio naturale o urbano.
In Distant Landscape, una proiezione video, l’artista racconta allegoricamente in modo poetico e al contempo duro la natura e la paura che nasce da ciò che di essa appare all’uomo inspiegabile e misterioso. Il video , che è stato realizzato in 8 mm a Akureyri in Islanda, rifacendosi al genere horror, è costituito da immagini di paesaggi in cui si riconoscono tracce di un personaggio che si muove in un ambiente desolato. I testi che scorrono sulle immagini parlano di storie di uomini nel loro rapporto intimo e sensuale con la natura.

Nei suoi lavori l’artista pone l’accento sui limiti della nostra capacità di osservare la realtà e interpretarla, suggerendo che spesso ciò che vediamo è ciò che ci aspettiamo di vedere, frutto della proiezione di desideri e di paure.

Kristina Kvalvik lavora in modo sperimentale, i suoi video infatti contrariamente alla chiusura prospettica dei film d’intrattenimento, presentano una struttura narrativa aperta all’interpretazione dello spettatore ed i suoi personaggi prendono forma dalla prospettiva di chi osserva piuttosto che da quella di chi viene osservato. Inoltre tutti gli elementi classici su cui si basano i film di genere vengono decostruiti e riutilizzati creando un effetto allo stesso tempo familiare e disorientante per lo spettatore.
In Notes From a Stranger, che ricorda i film di genere “ dopo la catastrofe” e affronta il tema delicato della paura della solitudine nella nostra società, il testo, scritto a mano, fa pensare al narratore come ad un personaggio letterario.
Siamo in cammino in un paesaggio urbano desolato , e il senso di desolazione è accentuato da suoni come voci , rumori ed anche silenzi, che diventano elementi sofisticati dell’immagine e della sua percezione.
In Voices of the Unseen ci troviamo in un classico ambiente urbano scandinavo, una strada in un imprecisato ambiente borghese. Mentre ascoltiamo la voce femminile fuori campo, che sembra stia gradualmente perdendo la ragione, la visuale comincia a cambiare: è ancora buio o comincia a far buio e l'unica cosa che accade è il lento e misterioso rarefarsi della nebbia.
Night Time Wanderer è un film misterioso sull’inconscio e il sogno. La storia si rivela attraverso un testo le cui parole appaiono e scompaiono in dissolvenza sulle pareti delle stanze di un disabitato e misterioso ambiente domestico.
Infine The Wonder of the I , che dà il titolo alla mostra, è un libro contenente i testi della produzione cinematografica dell’artista nel periodo compreso fra il 2006 e il 2012 ed è anche frutto della sua ricerca sul testo cinematografico. I monologhi in esso contenuti esprimono poeticamente sensazioni di disagio e alienazione di personaggi che sembrano muoversi al confine fra realtà e sogno.

Galleria Muratcentoventidue is pleased to present The Wonder of the I, the first solo exhibition in Italy by Kristina Kvalvik, a young Norwegian talented artist.
The exhibition is supported by The Danish Arts Council and by The Office for Contemporary Art Norway.

The exhibition deals with the unpredictable and uncanny in nature, and the traces it leaves behind. The works presented in the show focus on the changes set in nature by external interventions or lack of the same. Kvalvik´s focus is narrative structures and cinematic gestures.
The book ”The Wonder of the I” presents fictive texts from Kvalvik´s film production in the period from 2006 to 2012. The texts allegorically relate to nature, fear and to what one does not see in both a poetic and cruel way. When there is nothing concrete to see, one starts to see what one expects to see, being a projection of desires or fears. The texts play with different positions of watching and being watched and aim to create a universe of dystopia. The inner monologues describe feelings of alienation and fantasy while a character are moving through a fictive universe, the unconscious and the dreamy. The observations lead to fascinations that later develop into obsession.

The film “Distant Landscape” (2012) consists of images of landscapes where you recognise traces of the character's movements in these desolate surroundings. Text posters roll over the images and tell the story of the characters in close and sensual relationship with nature.

"Night Time Wanderer" (2010) is a mysterious film about the unconscious and the dreamy. A hidden story is uncovered by text that reveals itself in an interior environment. These words are only visible for the eye in a small amount of time, then it dissolves and passes by.

In the film “Notes From a Stranger” (2009) we travel through a desolate urban landscape, reminiscent of an “after the catastrophe” movie, while the texts describe how the body moves through the environments. The narrator, like a literary character, is represented by a hand-written text. The sense of desolation is accentuated by the work’s soundscape. Seen as a whole, the film engages with our society’s focus on the constant search and fear of loneliness.

In "Voices of the Unseen" (2008) the character (voiceover) is situated in a classical Scandinavian, urban environment, a street in a generic, timeless, middle class environment. While we are listening to the character slowly losing her mind, the visual starts to shift. It is late evening or early morning, still dark or beginning to get dark, and the only thing happening in the image is the slowly moving of mist.

Kristina Kvalvik (b.1980) is a Norwegian visual artist currently based in Copenhagen, Denmark. She has studied film and Fine Arts in Norway, Sweden and Canada, and completed her MFA at Malmö Art Academy (SE) in 2008. Her work deals with matters relating to surveillance, the inexplicable and the threatening. She examines the limitations of sight and our ability to interpret what we see.
