C'est la vie

Musee national suisse Chateau de Prangins, Prangins

Swiss press photography since 1940. Sensational events - festivals, sporting competitions, disasters - enduring stars and ephemeral celebrities as well as ordinary episodes of daily life are recounted through classic reportages from the golden age of the illustrated press or captured spontaneously for the daily media.

comunicato stampa

In a journey through 60 years of Swiss contemporary history, the exhibition presents the press photographs of the two biggest agencies in French-speaking Switzerland during the second half of the 20th century: “ Presse Diffusion Lausanne ” (PDL, 1940 – 1972) and “ Actualités Suisse Lausanne ” (ASL, 1954 – 1999).

Following its success at the Landesmuseum in Zurich, the exhibition transfers to Château de Prangins in a version specially adapted for French-speaking Switzerland, and offers an insight into the exceptional archives of these two agencies, which contain several million images and are now preserved at the Swiss National Museum.

Through carefully assembled series of images, visitors can revisit the events that have shaped Switzerland and explore the history of press photography. Sensational events – festivals, sporting competitions, disasters – enduring stars and ephemeral celebrities as well as ordinary episodes of daily life are recounted through classic reportages from the golden age of the illustrated press or captured spontaneously for the daily media with a greater sense of immediacy. The tools of the ASL photographers’ trade, which have never been shown in public before, combine with unpublished interviews to pay tribute to their – mostly anonymous – work. It is thanks to them that we possess a remarkable visual record of our society through which we can each relive our own personal memories.

Catalogue “ C’est la vie. Photos de presse suisse depuis 1940 ” 92 pages, 146 illustrations, D/F/I. ISBN 978-3-905875-32-4. CHF 38.–

Swiss National Museum – Château de Prangins
Perched high above Lake Geneva, Château de Prangins has been the headquarters of the Swiss National Museum in French-speaking Switzerland since 1998. It is the perfect place to enjoy a walk, view exhibitions and learn about modern Swiss history. Its outdoor areas have recently been enhanced with the creation of a culture trail and the opening of an interpretation centre for the old-style kitchen garden.

2. A tour of the exhibition
“C’est la vie” takes you on a journey through Swiss history since 1940 from the perspective of press photographers. They captured events both major and minor, from the mundane and everyday to high days and holidays. Following its success at the Swiss National Museum in Zurich, the exhibition now moves to Château de Prangins in a version specially adapted for western Switzerland, consisting solely of press images from what were formerly the two largest and most important press agencies in the region: “Presse Diffusion Lausanne“ (PDL, 1940-1973) and “Actualités Suisse Lausanne“ (ASL, 1954–1999). For the first time, it offers visitors an insight into the several million images that make up their archives and are now administered by the Swiss National Museum.
